Some single pigment colors can be a bit pricey! Daniel Smith’s Sleeping Beauty Turquoise Genuine from the Primatek line is one of them. In this Monday mix, I am showing you how to mix a sleeping beauty turquoise hue today. When we see a color that contains hue at the end of the name, it is usually a pigment(s) that closely resemble the original. We see this a lot with cadmium hues, they don’t actually have the cadmium pigments, but look like them when swatched side by side.
I hope you find this #Mondaymix useful and one that you will give a try.

Awesome video. Actually the reason that one color that bleeds out leaving the hard ledges is because there's a Phthalocyanine pigment in it. It's not made with 100 percent gemstone, but the gemstones used are 100 percent real. They use the cheeper phthalo, quin or other like pigments with the small amount of powdered gemstones in the Premetek line of watercolor paint. A lab tech person on Instagram took the samples and chemically analyzed several of the Daniel Smith Premetek line and found Phthalocyanine pigments were used with gemstones and other like pigments. Those Phthalo and quin pigments mixed with very granular mineral pigments actually seems to look more stunning with color separation going on. More separation happens than combining two granulating pigments. Rose of Ultramarine really separates because it's a mix using a Quinacrine and a Granulating Ultramarine. I love playing with the most granulating pigments mixing with the most transparent non granulating pigments. Or putting two granulating ones together with only one extremely transparent, non granulating pigment to see triple colors going on.

Thank you for explaining this! I try to use mostly non-toxic or sustainable pigments. I am also trying to learn how different pigments interact and mix, beyond what color/hue they make. I find it extremely frustrating that Daniel Smith tries to make us believe that the paint is made from only ground gemstones. It's deceptive, misleading, and just plain rude to hide the pigments from artists. They seem more interested in making a profit than enriching artists with knowledge about the products they interact and create with. Any paint company can analyze it and find out exactly what is used to make it, so it is not about hiding the secret recipe from competitors. The only purpose is to make artists think they are using something rare, valuable, or special. In a world with environmental and health concerns, we don't need marketing romance, we simply need the truth.

@@wildflower1397Actually, I think they add Thalos or Quins is that not all rocks are of the same quality. The additions help keep batches closer to their model. Btw, I had heard that the sleeping beauty mines are no longer producing. This is the end of the line.

A long-time and well-respected teacher of mine recommended Mission Gold paint when I first began exploring watercolors. My first purchase was the 34 color set and as I began exploring mixing, I quickly purchased the 34 set of pure pigments. I never regret that purchase, as the paint is beautiful quality and the single pigment set has especially helped me in my learning of mixing and color theory. I was thrilled to see you use them for this video. After mixing for years now, I figured out that so many of the 'convenience' mixes were possible with what I had purchased at the beginning. I feel like Dorothy from 'The Wizard of Oz' in that, "You had it alll the time..." That isn't to say that I don't love exploring (and purchasing!) beautiful convenience colors. But videos like this are so helpful. The Sleeping Beauty color is beautiful (I am partial to aquas and teals) and I appreciate your taking the time to share your findings with us. I will certainly give it a go and thank you so much. Awesome video. :)

I loved this video! Color mixing is so fun and challenging. When you started talking about mixing in the white colors, I predicted somehow that you'd end up using Buff Titanium, lol. Your color was awesome! I actually do have a tube of Sleeping Beauty Turquoise.I had it on an old dot card and fell in love with it. I've haven't used it much, even though I've put it into a palette. What do you use it for in your paintings? Is it too granulating for skies? I haven't been doing many landscapes lately - I like to do florals, mostly.

I just ordered the Sleeping Beauty Turquoise for this video because a Patron requested it for a mix, it will definitely be in my palette and I could see myself using it to mix in with other colors in landscapes. I’d bet it would mix up some beautiful greens to provide texture in some cooler distant grass or trees. I would probably try it for painting water and yes, I use other granulating colors in skies sometimes, I would try it (at least once 😉). I can only say how I think it would be good because at this point I have only swatched it to mix up a color that matches it. I am thrilled I had the request otherwise I may never have ordered it and it is beautiful!

I took a look at your link for the Mijello… it shows cob turquoise as code w590 (b28), yet on Jackson’s open stock Mijello cob turq w590 is listed as a b28y3w6 mix - I wonder which one is correct? Maybe comparing your w590 with a mix of b28y3w6 could be a future ‘let’s mix…’ test ;)

Oh that is interesting! I went to have a look at that. The tube I have does not anything other than PB28 when you activate it the color doesn’t look like one that has white in it either. I do see what you are talking about at Jackson’s. I don’t know why they would add the PY3 and PW6 to it, this one is such a beautiful color with the single pigment in it. I hope they haven’t changed it and would wonder if they have what would replace it in the pure pigment set. I love the color as it is. I may have to investigate that a bit further and reach out to Mijello and inquire. Thank you for sharing that information.

@@deborahrodney6562 so far the one I poured seems to be re-wetting ok, I hope it doesn’t get worse as I go. I know my tube of Daniel Smith Hematite dried hard as a rock and doesn’t rewet well. I liked the color but I’m considering trying it in stick form to see if that will rewet easier. If the Sleeping Beauty Turquoise begins to act the same it will also be very disappointing considering the price! So I was curious, and started playing around with trying to create this color dupe as well (because, grinding Turquoise into a paint makes me kinda...sad. Also/Plus, EXPENSIVE! LOL) I have the same 24 pure pigments set from Mission Gold, so I used the same PB 28 > Cobalt Turquoise, primarily. I also mixed in some Amazonite Genuine by D.S., since I had that - and it produces the exact same shade, but MORE translucent, and NOT GRANULATING! Which I kinda love, TBH. Alternatively, for a slightly brighter & blue-er option (NOT dark/deep, like your earlier examples with the Cerulean Blue Chromium), I also tried adding the same Cobalt Turquoise with D.S.'s Manganese Blue Hue < PB 15; and then added in some dabs of Titanium White

I read somewhere that DS does get the turquoise from Arizona!! I remember because I was a little shocked as most pigments are sourced from other countries and I thought it was so neat that they were buying it here. Hopefully, helping people. I used to work on the Navajo Nation in helping the education department. It was hard and long trip (last flight seats 4 and the pilot handled luggage, tickets, everything!!) but it still remains one of my favorite places. One woman took me all over the area sharing the history, some of it was horrible and she remembered when they separated children from parents and put them in public schools….). I’ll never forget the canyon that so many families hid in its caverns/holes in the walls to protect their children from being taken. You could feel the atmosphere of it…moving me to tears. They didn’t even try to communicate with them. Parents had no idea what they were doing with their children. I love some of the people I met and the beautiful country and the original food some would cook for me when I visited… Long story….it’s why I remember it was mined/purchased in Arizona Thank you for humoring me and letting me share some great memories too!

You can find the palette I currently have here: go.meedenart.com/3UpWKzi and if you are interested in anything from Meeden, ordering directly from them with code Clark10 at checkout will give you a discount.

Lovely mix, but you used crafter/artist math. Buy 3 tubes of paint to mix one. If the total cost of the 3 tubes is less than the single tube, then yes, mix away. Otherwise, it's more cost effective to buy the single convenience tube. Especially when one of the major art stores have a paint sale.

I believe the request was coming from an artist that has a variety of other colors already in her collection and wondering if she could mix it from something she already had versus purchasing the one more expensive tube. So the original request was can I mix it and save money? However, you are correct, if you do not already have the pigments in the mix, the actual tube could be the better choice, but then again 3 tubes at 45 ml just over $30 vs one tube at 15ml at almost $23, what's the best choice?? I can't answer for others but you are right the crafter/artist math can come in to play there.
