How to Model FRAMING in SketchUp Free!

Hello, nice video and thank you for the information. I am trying to do a framing on top of a rectangle that is representing a plywood sheet. But when I draw a beam and push/pull the beam on top of the sheet it is not creating a new object, just merging them to one. Do you know how to solve this?
