Don't know if it will help, but you can scoop out the amount of drywall mud you think you need, then add black or dark grey dye to it. Save some time when you go to paint it.

Great ideas. If you use quick set 45 or 90 drywall mud at 1/2" it usually doesn't crack. Might be a little harder to sand.

So, you are using spackling putty? I use an old hack saw blade to clear the flanges. The was a great video. Thanks
