Loved your video. I have used mesh before many years ago. My first project was to make a border all around our bathroom walls. I used a piece of plywood cut to the height of the border and long enough to fit on my work table and short enough to carry into the bathroom. I covered it with waxed paper and used a glue to secure each piece of tile on the mesh. Then with the help from my husband, we took the whole thing to the bathroom. It was quite heavy. I put mortar on the area where it was to go. And then removed the tile from the board, peeled off the wax paper and pressed it into the mortar. I repeated this until all the walls including the shower had the border and then grouted it. After all these years it has held up just fine.

I am with you, tile mesh is a great product for large murals as they can be cut down into more manageable pieces. But when using Weldbond (dries clear ) the mesh will show through any transparent glass. Especially if you use a darker thin set for the final attachment, the white lines of the mesh will be seen through the glass. If you use a White thin -set tile adhesive for attaching to it’s final resting place you can still use Weldbond as your initial tile to mesh glue. Cheers

Hi Raul! Think of mesh as a placeholder so to speak. You'll adhere your mosaic to it, and then hand it off to the pool installer. I would use non-adhesive mesh and glue your tesserae to it. Sounds like a really fun project! Keep creating and I'm thankful you're here!🔥

Ordered a fancy mosaic - lots of marble pieces - from Mozaica (it was terrific!), but it was round (also had a mesh backing on it) and I was placing it over my stove and had to fit glass subway tiles around it. As cutting those tiles in curves was NOT easy, I decided to put a square marble edging frame the round (24") mosaic, and ordered more marble pieces from Mozaica (which they easily were able to send). So I needed to make "corners" of small pieces of marble and so seeing your video on how to apply these to an existing mosaic was really helpful. Thanks!

Such a brilliant video. Thanks. I want to create a few garden images to attach to my external wall. Drilling it's problematic so it needs to stuck to the surface itself - which is painted brick. This looks like a great technique for doing that, but I have a question. I normally see designs with a background filled in - but I would like these designs to to be plant and bird-shaped. It is still going to last if I cut the mesh around the shapes? Is there a video where you show using around the mesh to create specific shapes and how to attach these to a vertical wall please? Thank you in advance!

I'm making mosaic stepping stones from scratch. Yes, mixing the concrete, pouring it into a mold, then decorate the top of the concrete once it has set for a bit - till the water basically evaporates from the surface. Please tell me if this will work: I am wanting to use thinset to attach my pieces to the mesh, let is set overnight, then backbutter the mesh with the mosaic with thinset, and then transfer the product to my concrete while it's a bit soft. I would push it down a bit, until the top of the mosaic is level with the concrete top. Will the mesh adhere to the concrete? My plan is to use a hodge-podge of materials to make a sidewalk.

Julie I was wondering what type of table top have you found that works best behind using mosaic ? if you're not using the mesh and you want to use some sort of form what type of material what do you use for that? I'm an old stained glass artist that haven't done it for a while and getting back into it now that I've retired. I like the way you teach Thanks!
@JulieWeilbacher
@JulieWeilbacher 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Libby! Thank you for your kind words. It's great to hear you're enjoying my videos. As for a table substrate, you want to think about where will the table be placed (indoors? outdoors?). For example, you don't want to put wood outside. The weather and things like termites will destroy it. Cement board or Wediboard are great options. You do want to make sure that the substrate is supported underneath. If it's being installed on top of an existing tabletop then great! But if there's no support under it, you need to add that first before placing your mosaic substrate. If it's a small side table then it probably doesn't need any additional support. Keep creating and I'm glad you're here!💫

Hi Mary! Your adhesive choice will depend on your substrate and where the mosaic will be used (indoors/outdoors). If your mosaic will be outdoors I would highly suggest fortified mortar. If your piece will be kept indoors you have additional choices like a white glue (Weldbond), tile adhesive, and Apoxie Sculpt (which can also be used outdoors). Can you cover mirror glass in mosaics especially for an outdoor project. I'd like the incorporate some mirror pieces in a project, but I've seen projects that the mirror didn't age well and I think it had to do with maybe incorrect grout choice? @@JulieWeilbacher OK, I just happened to find your 'channel' though a FB site - 'Vintage Bathrooms'....and I've already learned a couple things just by watching this and reading some comments! TY! Of course, here's my little issue. I've got an outdoor, inground fountain (Tucson, AZ) - It was tiled when we had it installed about 10 years ago. First Six inches from top down, there is 1x1 mosaic tile. Below that, all the way to floor AND floor of fountain is tiled in 2x2" tile. (All tile originally on mesh) - In the past 6 months, the 1x1 tiles are popping off 1 by 1. I decided to drain the fountain, collect the 'escapees' on floor of fountain and since the 2x2s seem to be stable, I thought, 'Oh easy. I'll just have the smaller mosaics at top taken off and I'll replace them with new tile. I've got the new round, smaller than penny tile (on mesh) - but now I'm to the point of REMOVING the existing tile installed with thinset/grouted and prepping the area for the new sheets of mesh. Might you have a video explaining how to REMOVE tile/prep area for new? TYIA!

Hi Julie, I am getting ready to make my first attempt at creating a mosaic on Mesh, that I have just bought. Okay, now following your instructions makes it seem easy - questions, this is for a 9"x7" wood box - I plan on placing Mesh over the coloured pattern and following it in placing the Mini square tiles (it's a Roman design from free patterns) do I apply the tiles with Well Bond or Thin Set to the Mesh? As I watch you, you also grout the mosaic piece before attaching it to the box lid. (as I am typing, Just hearing you say Weld Bond is your favourite choice when working on Mesh). Okay, once that would be cured, how do I attach the meshed mosaic to the box lid? Look forward to your advice. Thanks, Elizabeth
@JulieWeilbacher
@JulieWeilbacher Жыл бұрын
Hi Elizabeth! Well how exciting for you! Mesh mosaics are so much fun! Use a little Weldbond to adhere your tesserae to the mesh. It's just to keep them adhered to the mesh. Then once the mesh mosaic is dry, spread some adhesive (your choice!) onto the box and place your mesh mosaic on top. Wait for it to dry, then grout. OR the other alternative is to grout your mesh mosaic before you adhere it on the box. This video shows how I grout mesh mosaics: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rISqp2WErrSVm9E. Keep creating and I'm so thankful you're here!🔥

@JulieWeilbacher
@JulieWeilbacher 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Pamela, thank you for watching and glad you're here! I've only worked with Titebond on wood projects, but I know they have multi-purpose 'white' glues which would be fine...you're only using a small amount any way. I would suggest doing a spot test to make sure your tesserae sticks to the mesh before you use it for your final project. Let it dry 24-48 hours before checking for true adhesion. Good luck!

Can you use the weldbond for projects that will be used for stepping stones?
@JulieWeilbacher
@JulieWeilbacher Жыл бұрын
Weldbond is water soluble. So it's not acceptable for a stepping stone. Rather, you should use something like a cement-based adhesive, Apoxie Sculpt, or a water/weather resistant silicone. Weldbond is acceptable if you're just lightly adhering tesserae to mesh, and then transferring your mesh mosaic onto a layer of cement-based adhesive (or any of the adhesives mentioned above) on your stepping stone. Keep creating and I'm glad you're here!🔥

Some of the tiles you were gluing onto the mesh had some transparency allowing the mesh to show through. When you adhere the mesh onto the substrate with, I’m assuming, thinset, does enough of it squish through the mesh so that it is camouflaged and only a solid white background shows through the glass rather than the mesh pattern?

Hi there! Yep, you can roll your mesh mosaics which I've done and handed over to a tile installer for final installation. Julie two quick questions. 1. I have my mosaic tiled on mesh using Weldbond . My plan is to apply thinset and then the mosaic onto that. My project is for a birdbath so I’m a little nervous because I know Weldbond won’t be safe in a wet environment. Should the project be secure once it is mounted on the thin set ? 2. Do you have any particular suggestions for mosaic on a bird bath ? Thanks so much for all your videos .

Hi Sunday Sunshine! You're just using Weldbond to secure you're tesserae to the mesh. Your thinset will secure the mesh mosaic to the birdbath substrate. Once it's fully cured you can then finish it off with a fortified grout. What a fun project! Keep creating and I'm so glad you're here!🔥

Hi Time Enuf! Great to hear you enjoyed the video. Start with creating a paper pattern and then transfer it to the mesh. This method would work for the inside and outside. When tiling you might want to keep your groutline a little further apart or closer together depending on which side of the bowl you're working on. I would do a little test on a scrap piece of mesh first. Once you establish your groutline then get started with the pattern and tiling. Exciting project! Keep creating and I'm so glad you're here!🙌

When using the adhesive mesh, you mentioned it looses it's stickiness eventually. Does that mean that once you make your mosaic the pieces will gradually start to fall off the completed project? Or were you just saying that once you pull it out to use it for a project, it won't be sticky anymore and you'll have to use your own adhesive anyway? Thanks!
@JulieWeilbacher
@JulieWeilbacher 11 ай бұрын
Hi Maria! Yes, over time the adhesive mesh can/will eventually lose it's stickiness but that could be years down the road, depending on how it's stored, the quality, etc. You would use self adhesive mesh to assist in your mosaic making, most likely as an intermediary substrate upon eventually adhering it to a final substrate with proper adhesive.
