A co-worker has a 50s Dodge truck that he wants to be able to roll around for yard art but one tire will not hold air. So I volunteered our shops services to remove his crusty old tire and replace it with a late model radial tire and tube since the local tire shop wanted nothing to do with a 2 piece wheel anymore. DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME! As always, thanks for watching!

I had a 68 1 ton Chevy dump truck with split Wheels, driving through town I heard a god-awful bang! And didn't think anything of it cuz the truck kept driving fine. On the way back from getting my coffee I happened to see a split ring sticking out the side of a parked car 😂 I pulled up down the road ran back and yanked it off the car and went home, I was young and dumb, in retrospect I should have left a note which I would do today. Yeah they cause some damage 😱 I love your channel, keep up the good work 👍✌️🇺🇲

Still the mismatched piece of tin in my uncle's shop from when that 3 piece split rim blew apart. Locking ring went through the wall, across the street, and through the neighbor's kitchen window where he was eating breakfast. Hell of a way to wake up. Always use a tire cage or aim down range.

As a young lad I worked on a garbage truck fleet, I was blessed with all the tire changes and all were split rim. Chains and cages were standard fare depending if it was in the yard or on the road, saw to many flaps and tubes to last a lifetime. Nothing like swinging a tire hammer to build some character, never had a ring blowout under pressure.

Me also. You never had problems because you knew what you where doing. And think about this the wheels where relatively new back in the day. Now they are 50 to 70 years old and if they are not in real good condition should be scrapped. Might be ok for yard art with a low air pressure but never ran on the highways.

My 1989 Toyota Landcruiser came with split rims like that only not so rusty. I used to watch the tyre guys inflate them in a steel cage. I managed to replace a tube out in the bush once so they good for that kind of thing. I wrapped it up in a tow strap in every direction. 🤠 Eventually I got rid of them when I started getting a flat every two months. Never did find out why.

My parents owned a construction company in the mid 1970’s. We had a mechanic who had a split ring rim come apart on him while he was seating the ring. He didn’t have it chained and when the ring came off he raised his hands to block it and it broke all his fingers and hit him in the forehead. They put a metal plate in his head and fused all his broken fingers. That was the last time anyone in our company touched a tire.

When I was in the National Guard, here in KY, yeah I was a 64C( light wheel and heavy track mechanic) and everything in between those. Anywho, we had a cage that we put those wheels and tires in to pump them up ( the old split rims) anyways we had a ol boy that almost got cut in two by one of those split rings, came flying off as he was pumping it up, dangerous frickin things. Those were only on the older type trucks, I guess like Nam and earlier, actually most vehicles that were over in Nam and Korea too, was surplus shit, hell that's the guard's got was hand-me-down stuff.

Changed s few “back at the ranch” , had a power wire wheel brush that used bench grinder size wheels, thoroughly cleaned rim, painted primer on all parts, greased that rascal up with tire lube out of a can ( ask Mojo) , slowly inflated in increments, banging around the tire as I went. Mechanic at the time I was there gave me a present of a slide hammer like bead buster made out of 1 1/2” shaft heated and beat into a spoon shape, surrounded by 1 1/2 sched 40 pipe. Heavier than snot, got the tough ones off! Chaining it, very wise!

It was scary to watch this video. From an old time farm tire buster. 1. Several types of split ring tire/wheel combinations exist. Others were common where the ring did not have a split. It was just a single closed loop. (These were the least dangerous to mount INCORRECTLY.) 2. Rings, split or continuous, should lie flat, not twisted, oval, or (as in this video) spiral. 3. Grooves, rims, and especially rings should very clean. 4. Inflating should be in several steps.. First, secure the ring in some way. The suggestions here will all work, just remember to imagine a steel frisbee disc spinning towards your face or gonads at fast speeds and high rpms. Air to 10 psi or so, then hit ring to assure proper seating as done here.. 5. Then increase to about 25 psi. Deflate to flat or very low pressure, then add oil to the bead of the tire. Not much, just enough to help gradual sliding. At this stage it is mostly safe to add air to about 25 psi, recheck ring seating, then add more in increments of 10 psi or so until desired pressure is reached. After all this preaching, I can admit that I had been doing tires for trucks, loaders, farm equipment for several years while ignoring old timers' warnings about safety. Then, at about age 20 I saw one blow apart. It scarred me for life, lol. There are some pretty dramatic videos on KZbin to show what is possible. Most are not so dramatic in real life. So, I close with a suggestion. Think about which body part you would be ok with losing just because you are stubborn or careless. Thanks.

Back in the late 70’s when I was a teenager my dad owned a dirt hauling business. We had 4 international tri-axle dump trucks. Since I was the kid on the crew I got to fix flats. Of course, the trucks all had split rims. Some were Daytons and some were 10 hole Budd (I hated mounting those Dayton’s!). I knew the stories about the split rims exploding. I was always super careful and took extra care to hammer the crap out of the rings when I installed them to make sure they were seated. Then I’d clip on the air chuck and walk far away for awhile. I never had one come apart on me. I know they were dangerous but I actually wasn’t that worried about getting hurt. Maybe that was just youth and inexperience.

Reminds me of working at good year in the 80`s. We used to inflate the mounted split rims under the arms of the lift. We finally got a split rim cage.We hired some guy with supposedly lots of tire experience. I come back from lunch to see him inflating a newly mounted tire on a split rim. He was inside the cage ,tire on the outside arm through the bars inflating the tire ! I asked him what are you doing ? He said these things can blow up.So I used the cage ! L.O.L.

Used to absolutely HATE doing split rims on heavy trucks, even with an inflation cage they were still dangerous AF. Glad they went to 1 piece tubeless rims some time ago! We used to slide the tire & wheel assembly underneath a heavy truck to inflate them if there was no cage available, hook up the air chuck with about 100' of air hose and turn air on & hope for the best.

Very cool! I had a ‘65 F250 camper special that originally came with split rims. Right after I bought it I replaced the wheels with later model one pieces. When I called the tire shop to price new tires and they wanted to know what vehicle they were for the second question they asked was if it still had split rims on it. They also told me they wouldn’t touch it if it did. I never did mess with the split rims but it is very interesting to see how to do the job. I was lucky enough that the bolt pattern was the very common 8x6.5. I can definitely appreciate the hard work that goes into replacing tires on very hard to find wheels like those. They have to be “as rare as hen’s teeth.”

I think pretty well any of them would be safe enough if you do it right. I spent a few years doing it wrong in every conceivable way. When I learned the methods these were still pretty common in farm country where I was raised, and I just thought the old timers were trying to scare the crap out of a 14 year old kid. A few years later I saw a loader tire blow a round "safety ring" off of a 3 piece loader tire with a bonded steel shoe attached to the tire. (I had been on it for about an hour trying to get the tire to seat against the rings.) My boss came out to the shop and took over. BOOM! I revisited safety tips from everyone I knew after that.

I've mounted exactly two split rim wheel tire combos in my life. I don't know much about them but they made me nervous based on what the old timers said. I never thought of the chain method but would lower the lift arms on top of them when I aired them up. It looks like Duff knows the safe distance is about 60 yards though.

My dad helped me mount more than one set of "center splice" rims when I was a kid on the farm.. chain the tire - then it went behind the "knee knocker" wall in the Machinery shed for air.. Good times! Make sure you try on those shirts before saying they won't fit.. some run very small. Appreciate the content 👌

People come for miles around to a tire shop in my town because they're the only one around that will work on split rims. If that shop ever closes down we're screwed because of all of the log trucks and farmers here.

Mortske i worked in the Tire and Auto buisness for more than 30 years starting in 1978 . I did alot of split rims the standared 18 wheeler ran 8.25x20 or 9.00x20 wheels and most 3/4 and 1 ton trucks ran 750x16 tires , The rims i was most afraid of were the 3 piece rims , i had 1 old customer that had a 65 chevy 3/4 ton that had those on it in 15 inch , i gritted my teeth every time i had to air them up and i had a lift i set on top of the wheel with a remote air chuck but still had to reach in and tap with a hammer to set the bead and adjust the ring . Was at our headquarters location one day and was standing near a guy that had a 16 inch in the cage (never had used one ) when he reached in to take the air chuck off is when the ring blew barking that arm on the cage and the 80 psi he had in it blew him 3 feet back with his ass into the sheetrock of the back office . He was rushed to the hospital and got his arm set then cleared rust out of his eyes , which he had ti go back to the eye doctor to have more taken out of his eyed because it was some still in there . I think it was 1985 the insurance would not covre the shop if we kept doing the split rims and we started going to salvage yards and getting all the solid rims we could find and changing folks out that still ran the old trucks . So yes those can be Widow makers also !!

I have a set of those 15 inch 8 hole three piece rims. If there not rusty or damaged by exuberant hammering they are ok. Its those two piece kelsey hays wheels that are widow makers. Watch our videos. Ive been fixing truck tires for over 5 decades.

Yes we have a cage and use a long hose and regulator when inflating those tires. So far our tire cage hasnt been tested and proven.

The widow makers were a three piece wheel. One part looked like the one big piece of the three piece wheel. Then there was a one part that looked like the ring used here but was solid, no split, once tire was down on the big piece you slipped this solid ring on the wheel then there was a snap ring that fit in the groove of the rim and a groove on the ring held the snap ring in place. Getting all three pieces in place before you added the air was the tricky part. If they weren't right when you were adding the air the snap ring would slip then the snap ring and ring would depart at high speed. When I was in high school a friend worked for a trucking company as a mechanic. Changing tractor trailer tires was part of his job. They didn't have a cage, they just leaned the tire against the concrete block wall that was about four feet high then the building was built on the wall, with the split ring against the wall, hooked up a clip on chuck on the valve stem then turned on the air. Usually thing worked out ok. On day it didn't, they heard the boom. Upon inspection the snap ring and wheel ring was outside stuck in the side of the bosses pick up truck. After the wall was fixed the boss decided a cage was a good idea. Mortske, using the chain is not a bad idea. Once chained up hooking the air to the valve stem should be done with a clip on chuck and air controlled by a valve from at least five or six feet away with the wheel lying on the ground splitting down. The way out did it if the split ring let loose the chain would hold the ring, from flying off but the ends and the side away from the ends could fold up and down lot of damage to your arm. Having the chain around the ring in four places would have been safer than just two. On the farm one Dodge Power Wagon 4WD we bought had the three piece wheels. We did our own tire work. We got different wheels. The Boss new those wheels could kill. This was the second Dodge Power Wagon 4WD pick up. This first was a 3/4 ton the second was a 1 ton thus the split rims. They both had the straight sixes. Not the slant six. The light duty one I think had the 225 six, the heavy duty one had the 251 six. Both were pretty awesome compared to newer trucks, the heavy duty one was truly a monster of a truck. It could pull like a farm tractor. The only time I saw either stuck was when we went to pick up the big one. The sons of the owner had it out in the barn yard were the mud was belly high on the cows. They got out there fooling around and buried it in the mud till it wouldn't move. It sat there till the winter and the ground froze up. The boys then figured they could get it out then. One went out and tried and couldn't get it to move. The other one said I'll show you how. He went out revved the engine to near max and sidestepped the clutch. This blew up the universal joint inside the driver's side axle. It sat there till we bought it. When the mud dry and firm we went out with the 4020 with the logging arch and picked up the front end of the truck and pulled it out. Replaced the axle on the driver's side and fixed the brakes and used it as snow plow truck till the boss got the snow blower to put on the 4020. I'm pretty sure someone is still driving it now 25 or so years later.

No the widow maker is the Two piece Kelsey Hays rim. It hasnt anything to positive lock the two halves together. Its just a oval interference fit. Watch my videos on our channel. If assembled properly the three piece rims are just as safe as a lock ring. I have some and like them.

When I was in the US Army years and years ago I used to change 900- 20s and 1100- 20 tires with Split rings, we had a special cage we use to put the tires in to air them up. A Dude in the Motor Pool beside ours tried to air the split rim tire flat on the ground and it popped and took his head off... I always used the cage, my bag if this is to much, just brought flash backs of it, sorry......

That tire they are changing should have a flap in it because the tube will rub aginst that rusty wheel and either blow out or start to develop a slow leak.

I had to use cut-off wheel to remove tire from 2019 eco sport, let's just say some shady shiit at the repair shop, i think they put someone else's wheel on my car from the same Make of car, my eco was hit by a deer on passenger side, that then later myself "MONTH" ran over street grade, and blew out cracked rim, best 490.00 i ever spent on Ebay. think the split rim just simple process. My old man taught me a long time ago throw a chain around Pray you seated it well.

How to mount a tire on a split-ring rim? Very carefully. I did two of those back in the late '70's. Used a chain just like you did. Never did another after those. It was a Sunday and we were the only place open at the time so I broke the rules not to do those. Used to use one of those tire machines that had the straight bar you slid over the center part. If you weren't careful it might fly up and bust you in the chops. Hated that machine.
