Your timing on this for me is perfect. I'm just a newbie hobbyist trying to learn watercolor and at the same time perhaps offer my daughter a few pretties for the walls in her new home. As I'm not that good, I didn't want the expense of framed and matted, etc. So a few weeks ago I bought some wood panels and Mod Podge which I remember from my childhood... we took clearance calendar pictures and MP'd them to panels and filled whole walls with kittens or cars or whatever. The current panels and MP are still setting in the bag because I've been very concerned how it would work for watercolor and watercolor paper. THANKS! I also think you've perhaps helped me find the way to preserve "finished" areas, which I'm already thinking may alter the steps I've been trying regarding the painting's subject and the background. DOUBLE THANKS!

Can you mount then cover? Have you have used release film instead of paper so you could wipe and reuse it?

Yes, you can mount it to the hard canvas board and then cover the painting with Mod podge if you want or just spray it
