Thank you for the tutorial. I have a couple that have been languishing b/c I didn't know what to do with them in a pot. I may need more moisture retention as I live in Los Angeles. I've failed mountings of ferns and bromeliads b/c they dried out. So I'll add coco chunks next time to see how it makes a difference. Thanks again!

Thanks for this informative video. Do You also have some kind of overview which plants need what kind of "shape moseball", or core medium. I heard Ball scape: Ridleyi, or in pumice (dryer) for Ridleyi or Veichii? I hear you're counting, is there a reason? Do you also have some kind of "resource" with pictures and information of this special plants? But thanks, for this video!
@aloneinoasis Жыл бұрын
Hello! Thanks for your questions. Yes, I always ensure the matured plant before mounting them on board. But in general, all the staghorn can be mounted in a round shape moss ball. But some prefer to mount it on a more flat surface. You can actually join some facebook staghorn community groups or search the hashtag on Instagram to get to know more about the species and the matured looking platycerium too.

Do you seal or waterproof the board you’re using to mouont the plant? In other videos they make this point very important but if you use driftwood it is also sealed? Sorry, and thank!
@aloneinoasis Жыл бұрын
Thank you for your comment! I do not seal or waterproof the board. Usually, the wood that I used for my platy is cut directly from natural wood without much process. But for certain wood, such as rengas and balao wood, I believe the carpenter already applies a layer of substance for protection. He told me that the substance will not harm the plant. (Not sure about the substance name). =)

Use coconut oil to seal your board it's natural and works

What do you think about mounting on cork bark? I feel like I don't see many serious growers do that
@aloneinoasis9 ай бұрын
Hey! Thanks for the comment. Yes, I mounted mine in cork bark too, but only for my collective staghorn. For others, the plank is the easiest way to maintain and grow.
@MrSonoru6 ай бұрын
A few questions; 1. Can I just use some sort of plastic board to mount the platycerium? Or is there a reason against that? 2. How young is too young in terms of mounting a Platycerium? 3. How big should a board be? Is there a general rule you follow?
@aloneinoasis6 ай бұрын
1) Yes, it is up to you. Plastic is more robust too. 2) Too young means, the fertile frond and shiled frond is not more than the size of palm. 3) We always make sure the board is big enough to support the plant. Only make sure the moss size is compatible with the plant.
@plantguy2859 ай бұрын
I know this was actually kinda long ago but, what soil should i use for my platy until its mature? (pls respond)
@aloneinoasis9 ай бұрын
Hey! We usually advise using Moss or coconut husks, not soil. soil would be too compacted that it suffocates the root system. Platycerium are epiphyte plants.
@plantguy2859 ай бұрын
Just switched them to moss! TYSM for the advice!!

Could you please tell me how to hang a large green as one piece? Multiple pups with the new growth all facing different directions. I want to take this staghorn out of dirt and mount it but am afraid to put it upside down. Do I have to separate all pups and place them the correct direction or can I just put it on the board?
@aloneinoasis Жыл бұрын
Hello, you can leave them there as you like. Some prefer to grow them in clump form. Even in nature, this is the way they grow.

do you have to remove the wiring and line before the plant starts to cover it?
@aloneinoasis Жыл бұрын
Hello! I did not remove the wiring and the line. I'll just replenish them with moss to cover up, removing them might damage the root system too.
@markvaldes29375 ай бұрын
Another question, after making a round moss ball and securing with fishing line. I feel like the moss always feels hard, even after soaking. Is it possible I made the moss too compact during mounting, and is it a problem if it is?
@aloneinoasis4 ай бұрын
Yes, being too compact with pure moss is also a problem too. That's why I always use chunky media in the core to ensure good aeration. Make sure to soak it longer to let the moss fully absorb the moisture.

What are the black mesh plastic mounting boards you use on your P. wandae?
@aloneinoasis Жыл бұрын
Hey! Thanks for commenting. The mesh is to secure the bottom part of the plant to prevent too much moss falling apart.

The frond “bud” which is green should face up. That’s the correct orientation.
