I enjoyed watching yall's hike. I'm older now and have health issues, so I live vicariously through channels like this. I never did a through hike, but I did live and work in Yosemite National Park for 24 years. There are similarities to the life style of people who work in national parks and trail hikers. For instance a large percentage of park workers are seasonal and they learn to go hard at work and then play hard. Park life is different in a lot of ways from muggles life. Having worked so long in a park I can't imagine doing a regular 40 hour a week 50 week a year job. I worked lots of different jobs in the park so.I wasn't stuck doing the same thing all of the time. Some of the places that I worked would close at various times of the year so I could either take time off, or find a different job in the park. There is just a lot of flexibility, though some of that is changing in todays time. Working in Yosemite 30 years ago was a lot different then it is today. The people who owned the concession in the park, the curry company, were more flexible with peoples life style. they didn't pay well, but they allowed overtime, so you could trade shifts and get time off even during the busy seasons. Its too hard to explain it all in one short post, but I do see opportunities in working in a park for people who do through hikes, though sept is generally when most parks are slowing down and so there aren't as many jobs available. But for instance in Yosemite its when many summer workers go back to college and so there are jobs available. They come with housing, though the housing generally sucks. But you are surrounded by people who love the outdoors and you can find plenty of people to go have adventures with. I also wonder if trail hikers know about the kind of jobs nomads do, such as the sugar beet harvest starting in sept/October. Its a way to make a bunch of cash in a short time and they hire a bunch of people to do all kinds of jobs. It would probably be.a pretty big shock for someone coming off a trail as its often 6 day weeks 12 hours a day. but the pay is good and its over fairly quickly. Then you have an influx of cash to go do something like heading to the carribean. These are just some thoughts. You are talking about how the trail changes you and that happens to a lot of people in different ways. People who work in national parks often can't tolerate other life styles. And then there are the nomads who also can't tolerate the regimented 40 hour work week. So there are lots of people going through similar things and they have found ways to cope and make a new life that doesn't lean heavily on the 40 hour work week.

Thank you for all of this. Your insight is so unique. A typical 40 hour work week really does not seem like the idea set up to so many of us!

IDK if you mentioned it, but I find it helpful if you start planning your next hike ASAP. Not order the plane tickets, but schedule it on your calendar and try your best to stick to it. Weekend day hikes solo or with a group really helped me too. 😉

Those have definitely kept us going! It’s hard at the moment since we feel like we’ve almost “outhiked” all the New Jersey trails but we have some changes coming soon that will change that 👀

60 ticks?! Ugh! Someone told me once you could get dehydrated eating non-rehydrated food. I think it would be a really good idea to interview some “professional” thru-hikers. I met one once on the JMT and it was like he was on a thoroughly different plane. Interesting conversation. Thanks!

Huh! Interesting, sometimes we didn’t even have the option because of the water situation but personally there were some foods like oatmeal that honestly tasted great dehydrated 😂
