There's more than one way to get your horse to go where you want him to. Watch this little trick I use on Smokey to get him neck reining and guide just a bit better.

Thanks Matt. I have a three year old rooster wrangler daughter that I’m working turn around drills on. She isn’t quite tipping her head enough in the right turn around. Can’t wait to try this I think it will help set her up better on her own on that first step rather than me constantly trying to manage

I love this. It’s an old old old tried and true trick. It’s still used for a reason. I giggled because I’m 46 and we were doing this when I was a 10/11 yo kid. Giving me some nostalgia and a smile.

What a fun surprise to see this video... I haven’t seen this trick since our Grandpa showed us back in the day! Never seeing anyone else do it, I thought he just made it up, lol! I have used it occasionally over the years. Thanks for sharing and reminding me of it, and our beloved Grandpa.✌🏻

I’m training a little pony (quarter pony) for my kids for when they get older. (I’m pregnant rn. Lol! But have a daughter that is 3) I know kids LOVE to pull and accidentally hurt things. so I’m using a Hackamore. Nothing in the mouth. I tried different things to teach neck rein, doesn’t seem to work with her. I guess it’s a pony thing because I’ve only trained quarter horses and one Clydesdale but they all had a bit in their mouths. I used to use this to kind of help but would do it with lunging. Is there any tricks to help with a horse that is using a hackamore instead of a bit? I tried using the lunge rope over the nose for it to get used to when it feels that pressure on its nose to go in that direction. I don’t know what’s wrong and I’m at a lost. Also not giving my kids spurs or anything like that. I don’t want this horse to be abused by kids that don’t know any better. Also, want it to be easy for them to ride her. I was going to buy a horse that was already trained, but I’ve never brought a horse that was very well trained besides one but they don’t have any for sell or anything that will be for sell. My Hackamore has a wide and soft cushion across the nose to prevent the horse getting hurt from the nose, if you are curious.

How do you try this with a horse that will not take a bit? We have a 9 year old mare that has been trained in a bosel and doesn't neck rain. My daughter (she's 9) just doesn't have the arm strength to keep riding her. Also, she's very anxious and has her head ALLLLLLL over the place! Any tips are appreciated. Obviously seeking help if I'm on KZbin lol

That sounds like nothing more than a lot of work! Prob need to start with a snaffle. Work on getting your horse soft in one rein 1st. And build from there

Thanks for this what a great idea!! I was wondering, are you at the same time touching his inside with your lower leg/spur? Because that is a lot like "inside leg outside rein" is all about in classical horseriding. I myself am blending everything, riding a five gaited Icelander haha, take all the tips I can get. Thanks for a great short yet thorough video. So effective!!
