I am autistic and this best bike maintenance channel for me. I like you are just talking about things that are happening on screen. Also bonus for the friendly voice. I have hard time concentrating when happens to two things at once, like talking about things not happening on screen. Plus every subject, I retained the info just by watching once. I think it is your hyperfocues style, Sometimes I feel the instruction videos are more about the instructor rather than the subject. I been youtube since start. You guys nailed it down, I think you will see a lot steady growth. You are really good. The narration is very good for a instruction video. Soaking a rag with motor oil (any engine oil will do) and pulling the chain through it is all I do. That's it. Repeat every week on rainy conditions and every month on dry conditions. No special expensive chain oil, chain wax and no degreaser or anything else needed. Motor oil has everything needed, it works not only as a lubricant but also as a detergent and rust inhibitor, it has anti wear components, too. In winter it's thin enough and in summer thick enough due to it's viscostiy improvers it comes with when it is a multigrade oil which every motor oil nowadays is. Like I said, everything ever needed is already in motor oil included. There is no cheaper and more effective way to take care of your bicycle chain.

Hey, thanks for sharing your insights. I wouldn't advice to use the motor oil on a bike chain for a few reasons: 1. Motor oil is designed for engines and has a different viscosity (thickness) compared to bike chain lubricants. Bike chain lubes are formulated to penetrate the chain's rollers and provide proper lubrication without attracting excessive dirt and debris. Motor oil's higher viscosity could result in a gunky buildup on the chain. 2. Motor oil tends to attract dirt, dust, and other contaminants. When used on a bike chain, it can create a cutting paste that wears down the chain and drivetrain components faster. I hope this makes sense.

@@cyclemaintenanceacademy respectfully disagree. Motor oil, chainsaw oil & even 2 stroke oil can be excellent in winter conditions as they protect the chain from water & salt ingress. Plus any oil is better than no oil at all so they can definitely be used when no alternative is available. Lastly, if you mix any of these oils with white spirits at about a 1 part oil to 4 parts spirit ratio, it is a very good, cheap way to extend the life of your chain. The spirit helps penetrate into the rollers but evaporates in a few hours, leaving the thicker oil in the bearings. This is a well known trick amongst experienced cyclists.

So I’ve been using MucOff Dry Lube on my mountain bike. I thought the whole point of it was that it does not attract dirt nearly as much. But when I run my finger along the chain a few rides after cleaning and oiling, my finger is just as black as it is with wet lube. Any ideas?

Hi Andrew. I suspect that there is a big build up of dirt and oil between the rollers that is really hard to remove. You can either wipe it, ride it, wipe it, ride it, because every time you ride, more dirt will be forced out, or remove your chain and soak it or sonic clean it. For me, life is too short for too much cleaning. I ride my chain slightly under lubed, that way not so much dirt stays on, but it always looks a bit rusty. You're right, dry lube is supposed to attract less dirt, but if too much is put on then your chain will get dirty. If it really ticks you off, then you could change your chain more regularly. I put a new chain on the day before yesterday. it wasn't totally worn so I didn't change the rest of the transmission. It felt amazing! Well worth the £15. Let's face it, your chain has over 1600 tiny parts that are constantly exposed to the elements, picking up dirt, water and heaven knows what else. it is the heart of the bike. I don't think that there is a miracle lube out there, despite what we're told. From your description, I would dial back the lubing a bit.

You vocal mic is much lower than the music at the closing. I’ve watched three, and each one had to be turned up for the spoken word and the music comes in at least around 25 decibels louder. Not nice to my ears particularly when I’ve ear buds on, which is typical of me. You’ve a coupla weeks to change it or I’m sorry to say will not subscribe.
