Watch my art process on oiling out an oil painting! The following list below has the appropriate oiling-out mixtures directly from our friends at Gamblin.
They recommend diluting the mediums with Gamsol to help them to absorb into the pre-existing surface, this will reduce the absorbency of your acrylic gesso layer while also helping the paint layer bond well to the surface. All of these materials are available @blickartmaterials. The Galkyd & Galkyd Lite mixtures are especially popular due to their fast-drying properties. However, if you want to work wet-into-wet for several hours or over multiple days you may want to consider refined linseed oil or Solvent-Free Fluid as they have a more open oxidation rate before setting up.
Galkyd/Gamsol, 1:1
Galkyd Lite/Gamsol, 3:2
Refined Linseed/Gamsol, 1:3
Safflower Oil/Gamsol 1:3
Solvent-Free Fluid/Gamsol 1:3
And there’s a further bonus, if you’re painting alla prima like myself and complete your painting in one sitting/layer, it’s even okay to completely forego the solvent altogether provided you have a properly PVA sized and primed canvas and you wipe away the undiluted medium thoroughly. I prefer using this method vs mixing medium with my paints on my paIette as I appreciate the inherent thickness and pigment concentration of paints straight from the tube and this allows me to apply this thicker paint to my surface with relative ease.
