@@biancagarciarivas You should definitely try it again. They really taste different each time depending on how ripe they are or whether or not they're fresh or frozen. I like durian but there were definitely some that I didn't like. When they're too ripe they can taste bitter.

I have also never had it fresh. Every time I've had ice cream or a smoothie made with it, it's almost like eating onions and garlic combined together. One day I'll try the fresh fruit and hope that it doesn't taste the same as what I've had before in a smoothie

To remove the smell of durian from your breath and fingers, use the husk's "compartments" and put water in it. Dip and wash your fingers in the water. For the breath, fill a compartment with water, then use it to gargle (just the water from the husk, nothing else afaik). Idk why it works exactly but a quick search on Google said the inside of the husk "contains the compound 5-HMF, which acts as a deodorizing agent to neutralize the strong smell". Probably the same reason why it doesn't smell so much before you open it? Also i think this only works with the husk of a durian you've just opened. I'm not sure if it works with an old, dried husk.

If you look at the butt of the fruit (the underside of the fruit, opposite to where the stem is), there's a point where all the compartments converge. From there you can know exactly how many compartments there are in the fruit. And if you want to open it, stab your knife at the point and trace your knife along the compartment lines. It should be very easy to pry open then. As a matter of fact, you don't even need a knife. You could even use your fingernail. Stab it with your thumb fingernail until you stab through the husk (avoid the thorns ofc), and trace your finger along the line. That's how we do it in Malaysia.

its not the right way or the safest for your hands but it still works. if the durian is nicely ripe you can see a crack at the bottom. it will always be cracked only at the bottom. if not it might not be ripe yet but I don't know how is the condition of the durian coz of how far it traveled from the country of origins. after you get to spread open it from the crack at the bottom you can actually use the base of your palm near the wrist to push downward on both sides of the durian to open up the compartment without using the cleaver/knife

Apparently you can pry it open with your fingers. At age eleven, I found a small crack, gripped it, and literally ripped it apart. It’s not that hard, but you always feel really strong afterwards.

I am from Japan and fruit there is very expensive, but when I came to USA I knew it would be cheaper but I expected durian to coast a lot since it is not grown here? there? but it was super cheap. the peaches were so different very interesting I am wondering are you in states?
