I prefer to very lightly tap it on the side of the lid on a concrete floor or pathway. The whole idea is to release the vacuum seal and while a knife does this job, you won't have to worry about damaging it.

Mine banged the top of the lid flat against the countertop once (sometimes twice) and that broke the seal. Never had a jar break, but this way is quieter lol

I have been doing this for many years. I'm 74 and have been doing this for over 40 years and it's great to show everyone this simple trick. I all so use a bottle opener with the round side that does the same thing, but, you can's over power the lid. Great video for those who have a problem with jars.

There's also a tool called the JarKey that you can get for about $6.00. Works much the same way by simply breaking the seal. No damage to the lid at all. I keep one right next to the stove in the spatula caddy so it's always handy. One of the best kept secrets around!

Simple, excellent and it works! I use an old fashioned bottle/can opener by the crimp but doesn’t always take hold but it works after some hassle. This method with the knife is much better!
