It's also sometimes possible to open this type of low cost (cheap and nasty) lock using your ears. As you turn each dial there's a slightly different sound that the 'click' makes when it reaches the correct digit on each dial. When you hear the different click sound, move on to the next dial. Works on briefcases, padlocks etc too. You can also 'feel' the difference through a sensitive finger. I occasionally open (then reclose) a locked cabinet in our local DIY store to select and then purchase a high value item rather than waiting 10 minutes for a member of staff to open the cabinet. The store is too noisy to hear the tiny difference in the clicks but I can feel it, through a finger really subtly as each dial is turned.
@Pik_lok4 ай бұрын
Absolutely true. I do have a combination bike lock that's possible to audibly decode, the click sounds dull on the correct digit, and if you check out my Rhinolock padlock short, you can do them by feel... as well as quite a few other combination locks. Appreciate the comment, thank you. 👍

It's a good point, but if anything it would be easier if it was mounted, as you don't have to steady the item. For example, on a padlock this technique can bit very difficult as you need one hand to steady the lock, one to spin the wheel, and somehow another had to hold the paper. If it's fixed to a surface, whether that be horizontal or vertical, it's much easier as it only needs two hands. I have decoded one on a wall before, and it posed no problem. 👍
