How to Open Your Safe by Dialing the Combination Lock

Please enjoy this step by step instructional guide on how to dial open the combination to your safe. These instructions will apply to most high quality residential safes and, high security commercial safes. Here are the instructions below:
How to Unlock Your Safe with Your Combination
There are 4 simple steps to unlock your safe. Take your time, and be precise.
Use the Opening Index, which is where you line your numbers up, located at 12 O Clock.
1. Turn Dial 4 Times to the LEFT, then stop Exactly at "Your First Number"
2. Turn Dial 3 Times to the Right, Passing "Your Second Number" twice, then stopping exactly on "Your Second Number" the Third Time.
3. Turn Dial 2 Times to the Left, Passing "Your Third Number" once, then stopping exactly on "Your Third Number" the Second Time.
4. Turn Dial Slowly to the Right until the Dial Stops and unlocks.

do they always start CCW? When you do the last step, do you have pressure on the main handle? (I don't understand why the dial would stop... does it stop hard, or could you accidentally go past the spot?)

I don't think pressure is necessary on the last step and, if you've successfully dialed the combo, you should feel it unlock on the last step and, you will ultimately not be able to turn it to the right anymore.

Hello I recently bought a Sentry safe dial combo and do not have the combo at all. Its a decent home style safe and got it at a auction last fall. I have the model and serial numbers. Is there anyway to track the combo by this at all? Sentry model D880 serial Q020048 May someone please let me know? The safe has a dial combo and a actual handle to turn and open the door. I shook this a bunch of times and it surely sounds empty.

No...No...It's : " Get the DIAMOND tipped drill OR get the Nitroglycerine. You better know WHERE on the safe to drill otherwise you'll activate one or more of the mechanical anti theft mechanisms in the lock and or safe and you'll NEVER get in. I've seen safes where jackasses have spent DAYS cutting the hinges off only to find out THAT doesn't do ANYTHING ! Ha ha ha ha ha. Other jackasses have knocked off the dial or tried to PUNCH the dial shaft straight through the safe door only to find out that only makes it HARDER to get into the safe. You gotta' know what you're doing. It's far EASIER to just DIAL INTO the safe. The lock shown in this video is VERY EASY to dial into without knowing the combination that's why this type of lock is OBSOLETE. The newer locks with the "arrow switch" in the center of them have made it nearly impossible to "dial in" to them. It takes MANY hours...sometimes more than one day... to drill into a safe and that's if you KNOW what you're doing. They call them "SAFE(s)" for a reason fella's. Good luck. Ha ha ha ha ha.

@@MC-yy2bx you’ll need more than a diamond tip bit. How about a drill rig that straps around the safe, a mag template for the particular lock and a lighted long stem magnified scope to set all the gates. Wallah!

is there anything you need to lubricate the lock with? mine is only 2 years old, but it doesn't seem to work, even when I'm careful to do it and I'm wondering if there could be corrosion? I'm also worried that lubrication may just make it sticky

Lubrication is good. However, you'd have to take the lock apart and, I don't know if that is such a good idea for you to do, unless you have trained experience doing so. Have you ever used a key to operate the safe? If not, perhaps the key lock is disengaged. If this is the case, you could potentially install a new key lock if the mechanism allowed for it.

I did follow the instruction by using the dial mechanism but everytime I place and turn the key to unlock the safe, I can not turn the key unless I force it by using a plier to turn the key. I tried to put some WD 40 to hopefully loosen it but to no avail. what shall I do?

Hi Petronilo, what key are you referring to? Are you referring to an entirely separate key lock from the dial? In other words, does your safe have a dial and a key lock? If so, it sounds like you could use servicing on your safe. Something might be misaligned. Do you have a local safe company you can call? Let me know if you need my help.

Make sure you don't have anything in the way of the boltwork. Sometimes if the safe is overpacked, it won't close.

If you have a double-bit key and a combination lock on the safe, what do you do first? The combo lock and then turn the key? It is an Atlas 30X8.

We have a big cannon safe ,in our shipping container,and i have opened it once, and that was after i spent at least an hour spinning dial, well went out weeks after to open it and for the life of me i couldn't get it to open but ours has 4 numbers, what am o doing wrong?

Hi there. The combination locks on the safes are Sargent & Greenleaf model 6730. The safes themselves are Original Platinum Vault TL30X6 Safes. I think production has stopped on these models at the present moment but, we’ll see what the manufacturer plans on doing in the future.

I tried this with my safe today like I usually do with my National Security Safe. I was able to get the 4th turn to go past zero and stop, but could not get the handle to turn or the cross bolts to slide open. I have the correct combo, but for first time in 17 years, the safe won't open. I open and close the safe about 10 times a year.

It can work with a single number. For example, a combo like 80, 5, 56 can be a combination.
