Hey I have a question about safety and enforcing it to guests in a friendly way. I have an event space and a few club nights a week,where there are local organized dancing groups that come in. So this question is about a particular group. Dancers usually come with a second pair of shoes, a large bag over 20 pounds, a large jacket and sometimes try to sneak in a canteen. I have enforced a mandatory coat check for this particular group because I have found that this group can be very problematic when it comes to safety. Over the years I have found outside alcohol brought into the venue in a canteen, we are a licensed venue so, it's a big no no. So I had to prohibit canteens from coming in, although I only charge $1 for water, I make up for it. I noticed so much clutter around the whole venue, and especially a huge obstruction to all exits. The organizer is not supportive or takes this seriously. So when I enforced coat check , people will still sneak in with their belongings into the venue and still clutter fire exits, or just put all their stuff on the floor, where guests want to dance or simply sit. It's sad that I have to tell people to be more considerate but, unfortunately some of these guests simply do not care. We even have security. I have been yelled out and really stressed out by guests because I had to move their stuff to clear a fire exit. I want to keep supporting the Toronto dance community and the organizer, but it's such an uphill battle, and my only intention is safety. I just want everyone to have a good time and be safe. My coat check is even a modest $2 , and this just helps pay the coat clerk. I would love your advice!

Sounds like you need to have a meeting with the organizer and they need to get onboard or go somewhere else. Not what anyone wants, I'm sure, but safety is #1. If something happens, who do you think takes the blame? It's your responsibility, as the venue owner/manager, and your ass is on the line so you may have to stop being so nice. I'd also suggest bringing in someone (head of security for a nightclub, for example) who has more experience in this area and who can teach you how to manage this situation. Nightclubs don't tolerate this and nor should you.
