Jay, I can relate so much to this video. I used to be a very judgmental person. Thankfully I grew out of it and my life changed for the better. Great talk and thank you

I love Leberkase. It's difficult to get here in the US, but I found a couple German deli shops that make it. Sometimes I make my own, basically ground beef and ground pork mixed with spices, etc, then bake it for an hour. I would much rather be in Germany and get the real thing, somewhere in Bavarian. I'm getting hungry now....

I thought it was gonna be a Leberkässemmel the moment I saw it in your hand! 😄 "Leber" means loaf (Laib) and the "Kas" is the box in which the the loaf is baked, the Kasten. It is allowed to contain some Leber, but not required and rarely does. Thank you for sharing your introspective views, which are valuable food for thought for Americans and Germans alike. I love listening to other people who go out to experience life in a different corner of the world than where they were born. My own experience only includes a different country in Europe as I was born near Munich (hello neighbor!) and lived in Sweden for several years, but I still learned a lot about people and life in general and about my own country. Funny how that goes, some things can only be learned from a distance and it is very enriching for our minds.

hello jay, thanks a lot for sharing your thoughts with us - once again.... men often use to smile about the fact, that especially "pride and prejudice" seems to be the most famous novel from jane austen and that she only wrote "love storys".... boring.... but, the original title had been "first impressions" and taking a closer look to what she wrote about, is exactly what you are trying to explain right now. she was such an intelligent woman, noticing these things although she never left her sphere. people, who can look further, understand the importance of theses thoughts. and people with an open mind do too, like you. wish you all the best and a happy x-mas holiday!!! 🙂

I always rely on first impressions when meeting someone new. Wrong? Hmm... maybe, but it has always served me well.

The challenge is to notice when (and if) people do not behave according to your perceptions. We all tend to easily notice things that match our expectations, and ignore things that should cause us to question preconceived notions...

If you never notice any divergence, chances are your prejudice is clouding your judgement more than you realise.

It is funny, as a son of a butcher most of what ate were those leftovers from the shop. That could be steak, but in those days there was a transition to the more expensive meats. That meant kidney, tongue, liver, and yes it seems the USA has a disregard for it. Oh, that reminds me, I really, really love sweetbreads. Very few people know what it is, and even fewer know how to cook it. (It is not difficult but it takes time and a certain order to get a decent result) Last time it cooked for a bunch it was 7 hours, but it was goooood.

Hallo Jay, It just struck me that you remind me of Jay Shetty. Do you know him? Your topics are similar but I like you better. He is flashy somehow, whereas you are grounded and calm. Love your videos and wish you would have more followers and reach more people. We can all learn from you. Happy Holidays to you and your loved ones Edit: you forgot to mention that Leberkäs often does not have any cheese in it either. This is what google says about the name by the way: Die Annahme, dass im Leberkäse "Leber" enthalten sei, ist ein Irrglaube. Die Herkunft des Wortes ist vielmehr aus den alten deutschen Wortstämmen "Lab" und "Kasi" zurückzuführen. Die soviel heißen wie "Laib" und "Käs", also "Laib aus kompakter Masse". So, for those who do not speak German, the name is a relic of old German phrases that meant „loaf“ and „compound“ or „mass“. So the correct translation would be „loaf of compact mass“

You are so right! One of my closest friends I met through work, when she was assigned to me for teaching her on the job. My first impression over the duration of a couple of weeks was that I really didn't like her, I thought her to be arrogant and snobbish. One day I met her outside of work and we politely chatted and something changed, it was a really nice conversation, we decided to go to a café and have some hot chocolate with whipped cream, and chatted some more. Soon after she became one of my closest friends. Funny is, initially we both didn't like the other. Just shows first impressions are not always right. You always need to be open-minded.

omg i thought it is some smelly moldy cheese or something like that hahah, and there it is bavarian bread, there is bunch of variatons when it comes to those small breads for small sandwiches, this is so common in croatia too, we buy those kinds of small breads, often eat it empty with coffee ot put butter and salamy and ham or something else, of we use minced fred meat, or small sausages, posiblities are countless lol.. i really thought it will be something dissgusting what i dont like, my friend moved to canada for studies and went to USA to visit a friend, he got sick after eating american food, he said that butter taisted so havy, everything have so artifical tastesd and feels so heavy on stomack, he even gained weight during 7 days stay in the US.. i guess when we move so far, that our bodies and mind and tounge needs to adapt to different food. i literaly laughed when you removed the foil and there it was, i was so prepared to see some disggusting cheese or piece of cold jelly fat with meat or something.(dont know english term for that food), think die Sülze is german term, dissgusting thing, but it was small bavarian sandwich bread ...

The one thing that I have always had a problem with is when people start describing someone I have never met and tell me how great they are and how much I would like them. It makes me go into meeting them hating them before they get to a first impression, lol. That preconceived judgment usually blows over, but it always seems to happen. The reverse is also usually true where if people warn me about how bad someone is I usually think nah they can't actually be that bad.

It is a lifelong challenge! But you do get better over time. One huge problem for me is that sometimes the situation just calls for a judgement. And you can be sure that 95 out of 100 times you make a mistake when judging too fast. One advantage I have is that, though I flatter myself to have a pretty well trained palate, I am hardly picky: I can eat almost all foods with confidence, as long as they've not been processed too much. So, most typical, regional cuisines will at least not put me off a whole region or country. I do like my LKW (=LeberkäsWECKLE is what they say in the Swabian area of Germany) now and then. However, I am more into Maultaschen at the moment. Leberkäs (or Fleischkäs, as some say) with or without the Semmel/Weckle/Brötchen/Schrippe is right now a bit lower on my list of cravings.

At 6:08......yes I can relate! Examples: my daughters neighbors whom I previously thought of as nice people since the hubby was a police officer, said when their other neighbor was selling their house, they hoped a black family doesn’t buy it! Well that changed everything! Another example: an older man I had thought to be respectable, commented he could tell from ACROSS THE STREET, a woman was wearing thong underwater! My opinion of both are now much different from before.

„Leber“ can be translated with „Laib“ which just means loaf. Try the Leberkässemmel with pickles! Very Austrian!
