I’m a person that normally does character art with watercolor. Late last year, I’ve made good full-canvas illustrations that were the best paintings I’ve ever done, and since then, I’ve felt like everything I make coming forward has to be THAT good. That I can’t go back to doing simple, silly doodles like I used to. I’m not very good at coming up with those types of compositions, though, so I’ve rarely painted in the last two months Thank you so much for this video, Mako! Yes, you described it so well. It's good to know I am not alone. I usually end up finding things to paint, then another issue is sticking with it! Sometimes I find I need to plan the painting better. Luckily even if I just throw myself into it and sometimes that's the best way to learn, even if it means I have to do it several more times.

I wouldn't call myself an artist as such, but I have been there, too. But since art is just a hobby for me (and I have many more hobbies to occupy myself with) I just take a break from painting if I don't feel like painting. And I think as a hobby artist you shouldn't stress yourself out with having to paint every day, because that only causes more stress and more art block if you do not feel like painting. You'll still improve even if you just paint every other day or even just once a week.

Mako, you have helped me so much. I am in 6th grade, and my mom gave me Koi watercolors and watercolor paper. My paper is 147g/m2. But, it is really thick and doesn't buckle too much. Is 147 g/m2 thin for standards? What thickness do you use? About what thickness in pounds is it?

I noticed I would spend a ton of time looking at reference images for something that inspires me and it is a waste of time. So instead, I just grab a picture and go. Who cares if I like it. I just want to put brush to paper. Looking for the perfect reference is an excuse to procrastinate. Set a timer for 120 seconds and when that timer goes off, you have a photo selected. You don’t need a perfect reference photo.

I unfortunately feel this way all too often. Im terrible at drawing but I just absolutely love to paint and Im not the kind of person who can think of something and draw , paint or color. I dont even realize that I do this until I set up all of my watercolor supplies ( I dont have a specific area that I can keep some of my things out and I know this is something that keeps me from painting most days) and then I pull my journal out and some paper and then Im staring at it like uhm now what? I think getting a watercolor book will help a lot and Im very interested in your book and hope to get it sometime in the near future. For me I will look through every social media I have and then theres so many things that look amazing and relize its going to take me an hr to draw a stick figure lol. But really it takes a lot of erasing and when that happens I mess up the sizing on my paper and then my watercolor doesnt act how it should. Its nice to know that Im not the only one or one of just a few people. Thank you for your videos they're always helpful. Have a great day!
