This is the first time I have ever posted a comment online but after looking a a bunch of other KZbin video's on VW brakes, I thought yours was by far the best it made the job a lot easier great job. Thanks for this I do agree the lower spring is supposed to be on the inside but can't see what difference it would make.

Well, thank you very much! I'm glad it helped you and that my video was the first you've ever commented on! 😁😎

Thank you for this. The best part of the video is the expression on your face during the first 45 seconds of the video. You are clearly not joking that this is job you don’t enjoy doing. It looks like you just opened up a kids diaper and it was a bad one.

Cheers! Well I have a 2 year old son who we're currently potty training, but bad nappies are definitely part of my life at this time! And yes, that's quite probably the face I make! 😂

Thank you, this was the only video I found that showed how to put everything back together step by step. I was doing it all wrong till I saw this! Good job, thanks again!

Thanks for posting. FYI, Lower horizontal spring should be behind the pads, coming forward through the holes.
@Endfloat4 жыл бұрын
Thanks. Yeah I did end up correcting my mistake at a later stage. The handbrake lever on the trailing shoe should have also been on the outside, which would have left space for said spring to go on the inside.

I assume the brake adjuster (long-end, etc) would also be the other way around once the brake-lever side shoe was turned around (although can at least see how it fits from behind here!). Also, if anyone is thinking of changing the backplate beware of all the cheap ones on ebay they are too shallow so the brake drum grinds against them - I machined away at one to try and get it to fit, then compared it to an original VW one and it was clear that no amount of machining would ever get it to fit.

great vid! have to refurb mine soon and not looking forward to it. 1 question, to get the studs out to put in longer ones can you just hammer them out in situ? or do you have to remove the whole thing first?
@Endfloat3 жыл бұрын
You can remove the old ones in situ, but getting the new ones in will prove difficult. I think the best thing is to remove the hub to do it. You'll need a 46mm socket for the hub nut.

Why are the ebrake levers on the back side of the pad? All the photos I've seen they are on the front side of the pads for each side. Or is that a opss?
@Endfloat3 жыл бұрын
Yeah I think I got them the wrong way around. I've since corrected that mistake. I thought I put a note in the video description about that.

Nice video .thanks for sharing. Could you please write where can I order hand brake's? Is for 2wd and 4wd same?

For cleaning only why not just spray the crap out of it with BrakeClean with out taking it apart. Good vids on rear drum brakes on Rainman Rays Repairs.

Just looking at this video as i am doing mine currently, and the handbrake lever that is attached to the brake shoe, is that not supposed to be on the outside rather than the inside like yours, i have checked the bentley manual and its showing on the outside so it doesn't interfere with the spring that goes from brake shoe to the middle. ???
@Endfloat4 жыл бұрын
You can't put them on wrong. If you do they'll either be upside down or the lever will be on the wrong side. Anyway they work the way I have them.
@mathewwelsh91292 ай бұрын
Curious to know why you would not remove that hub nut and get the round plate with the lugs out of the way? wouldn't that be a lot easier. Now, I do see the Bentley manual recommends that it be torqued up to 369 ftlbs, and that's a lot, so maybe that has something to do with it?
@Endfloat2 ай бұрын
That's the torque figure for reinstalling it. Imagine the force required to remove it after all these years! They're a nightmare to remove.
@mathewwelsh91292 ай бұрын
@@Endfloat fair enough! thanks for the reply. I'm very curious to get the nut off and to be able to see and fiddle more easily with the break components. It's my first time on the rear drum brakes, and I just want to be able to see everything. I say that now, and am about to go buy a 46mm socket to tackle this nut!

Hi good video. Is it normal for the brakes to make rubbing noises after new pads? I'm getting grinding noises when going round corners and braking. Is this part of the bedding in?
@Endfloat2 жыл бұрын
That can happen, especially if there's a wear lip inside the drum. If I were you, I'd check everything over to make sure you haven't gone wrong somewhere though.
@macvanbus1424 жыл бұрын
Also i liked your green lower plate, where did you get them from ?
@Endfloat4 жыл бұрын
Our machinist in work turned them out on the lathe for me. They do the trick nicely. They're painted in green epoxy primer but they're made of aluminium.
@macvanbus1423 жыл бұрын
Hi, Thanks for this video, what is the thick green plate under the wheel coil/spring ? is it plate or level..can you put link for it ?
@Endfloat3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! It's a spacer to raise the back of the van slightly cause with the weight of the camping interior the van looked like it was dragging its arse on the ground. I made them myself, so no, I've no link for them.

nice video just the parts when you moved the springs was not clear due to camera was not opposite the drum centre.

I’m trying to get my drum off now, it’s really stuck. I’ve loosened the adjuster. I can see the drum is moving against the hub underneath so it’s not fused but not amount of prying or hammering will let me pull it off . Any suggestions ? I’m getting desperate!

@@joolz2506 bigger hammer! Or take off the hub nut and pull the hub off with the drum.
