A serger as it was designed for commercial sewing use, is almost always used to actually sew the seam, cut the edge and overcast. In higher quality garments, the seams are pressed open and it is only used to trim and overcast the edges in a commercial setting. Should be used as such at home for higher quality. Pressing seams open creates less bulk than overcasting them together. This is all for woven fabrics. Sergers are excellent for knits, but even then, a home sewist needs to be certain that a garment will fit before running it thru a serger - good luck trying to pick them out! I have several overcast stitches on my machine, I still prefer a 3-stitch zigzag, as it has less bulk than overcasting and doesn't tunnel like a plain zz. I'm 65 years old. Have made my own clothing for slmost 50 years. Not one person has ever asked to see my seam finishes, not even a boyfriend that occasionally splurged on bespoke. But let me say, trying to finish something in 2 hours in order to wear it - yes! I will absolutely overcast those edges together!😳

I completely agree that pressing seams open do create a less bulky appearance but I usually find when using cottons or lightweight fabric I can't see a huge difference! Thank you so much for such a detailed comment, it's amazing to hear you've been sewing for nearly 50 years!!

As a new sewist, I have only been sewing for a couple of months so I am very frustrated trying to finish my edges. I have a Singer heavy duty sewing machine. I have the ability to do the last stitch in the video but I don’t know what to put the width, length, and tension on. Can you please advise me? Knowing what stitches to use but not knowing what settings to use are equally frustrating.

Welcome to the sewing world! So amazing you only started sewing a few months ago - it's definitely a skill that you'll get the hang over time! I actually started out finishing my seams using pinking shears, as they did the job but finishing on a machine will last longer. If you're doing an ordinary zig-zag you can set your machine to 2-3.5mm for width and length but for the other stitch that'll need playing around with. I'd recommend getting some scrap fabric and testing different settings till you're happy with the result :)
