I watched the first Steve Hofstetter video I encountered, with great interest. Shortly thereafter I discovered a second video, ALSO about him encountering a heckler and dealing with the person. I remember thinking "Huh, this happened to him again? Well, he sure dealt with it!" I quickly realized that this is the guy's whole shtick. His career is savaging hecklers. I find myself wondering if he even writes out a set, or just goes up and kills time until someone heckles him. Thing is, with literally every comedian I'm fond of, I can rattle off my favorite jokes of theirs. I can't tell you one thing this guy has ever said into a microphone in a premeditated fashion. Thanks for coming to my TED Talk, I guess.
@mikemikemikemikemikemeup3 жыл бұрын
He is one of my least favorite comedians because of this. Most of his set are non-jokes and a lot of political stuff. But then once somebody heckles him that’s when his real show seems to start. But if his fans come there to see that then that’s fine. I think the good thing about his shows are that the people that are heckling him know that it’s a part of the show so it’s more fun for them. It also wouldn’t surprise me if he had someone that he hired to be a fake heckler just to make the show better. 😂
@Winasaurus3 жыл бұрын
Had that with Hbomber. While his videos aren't necessarily bad, I kept seeing "Fallout 3 is bad, here's why" in my recommended. I finally get around to going on his channel and see nearly all his top videos are basically titled "Thing most people like is bad" or "Thing most people dislike is good". I get that he gets more into it in the videos but when it seems so much of the content is based entirely on inflammatory titles it just makes it all feel very low-effort, the lowest hanging fruit to get people to click is to tell them something they think is wrong so they click to tell you they're right. That's like baby's first clickbait. While some channels have done it well, (Vsauce explaining yellow on screens isn't actually yellow since it's from RGB diodes and the rest is an illusion, well explained), it seems his videos mostly ride on "It's my opinion", and little else.
@Yixdy3 жыл бұрын
@@Winasaurus hbomb is the shit, my dude. Like for real. Every KZbinr HAS to click bait, but calling his multiple hour long, more-in-depth-than-anything-else videos low effort is just disingenuous

@@Winasaurushow is that clickbaiting? I have never seen an hbomber video but from your video it sounds like he makes a video about how he has a controversial opinion, then titles the video about how he has a controversial opinion. I doubt anyone will see this, as I'm two years late on this video, but the time frame from 5.34 to 5.54 contains most of the reasons as to why Leo Vader is my favorite KZbin-channel: A disdain for one of many cruelties in the world A kindhearted trigger warned A sincere interest in examining and understanding said cruelty An open mind towards the offender in regards to the possibility of them taking actual responsibility and growing as a person ... While simultaneously dunking on said dickhead for not actually owning up to their behaviour in a fun and entertaining way All while being smart, genuine, original and funny, all parts wonderfully so. Seeing James Acasters bit about cheese graters showed to me that comedy doesn’t need to be offensive or dark - and if it is most of the time it’s a self fulfilling joke for the comic and is rarely actually funny.
@Winasaurus3 жыл бұрын
I'd recommend watching Monty Python. Nearly all the comedy is miles away from being offensive or dark, yet they're still hailed as comedy classics. Being dark and offensive is basically comedy shorthand since there's people who think just being different to others is inherently good, therefore making jokes others won't is inherently funny, in their view. You see this with a ton of people who "say what they don't want me to" or "say what we're all thinking", when in reality they're just being offensive. In fact dark jokes can be done well, just most of the time they're utterly low-effort, riding on the fact they're dark to get a laugh or at least some reaction. For instance, David Mitchell's joke on Would I Lie to You? where someone asked him "What's the most complex thing you do in your kitchen?" after a talk about needlessly complex kitchen gadgets. To which he says "Contemplate death, I suppose.", with deadpan delivery of it being a typical answer. If I could link the clip in confidence of youtube not killing my comment for it I would. But it's great because while it's dark, the joke isn't 'he said something dark now laugh', it's that 'complex' can mean more than mechanically complex, and the classic misdirection bit of it not being a kitchen-specific task, even though that's what the question implies. Tons of british panel shows have great comedy and especially dark comedy that isn't offensive for the sake of it. Also the political comedy isn't painful to listen to because it's not american style "I'm going to riff on the opposition for a whole set", it's "we are all going to riff on whoever is in charge, regardless".
