I would add a large scarf too, useful for covering up when visiting religious sites, cool evenings and bathing suit cover.

That’s a great suggestion! Scarves aren’t my style (I prefer cardigans and we don’t spend time at the beach), but they can be very handy! Many travelers use them too so that’s a great tip! 😊

@@liorajacob8094 less about the brand and more about the size and the material. Go for either organic cotton, bamboo, or a silk. Something breathable and natural. Size is important. According to Hitch Hiker’s Guide to the Universe, Alison’s large scarf idea is essential. It can double as a towel, shade tarp, extra carry bag, pillow, privacy screen, extra dress or skirt, weapon esp when wet and twisted and so much more.

I'm 64 years old with experience traveling around the world solo since my teens. Like you, I'm a minimalist using only a photo backpack and rollaway which has my travel tripod plus all the other stuff. The strip laundry soap and collapsible containers are cool. The only things I would add to your well-defined list are a reusable bamboo cutlery kit and a silk "cocoon" sheet. Thanx for a great vid! BTW, I wanted to talk about the "weight limit". People pack wayyyyy too much stuff! I've NEVER EVER been over the weight limit in any country on any airline. Wear the heaviest stuff; layer if you have to. (Country count: 50)

You mentioned a travel tripod. Do you travel with carry-on only or is the suitcase with tripod checked in? If you have it in carry-on, have you ever had issues? Cause I would love to bring mine (or buy one that isn’t problematic) and travel without checked-in baggage but I am afraid that my tripod won’t be allowed… would love to know about your experiences :)

@@localabsurdist6661 I don't buy those things. Perhaps your comment should be to the general population instead of directly to me. But even if I did, 1 little can of seasonings or wash strips would weigh only ounces and take up less room than a pair of panties.

Our family of 3 went to Italy a few years ago & stayed in a hotel. Instead of trying to pack enough toiletries we just went to the pharmacia & bought what we needed for 2 wks. We also did laundry in Italy & just bought our soap from the vending machine at the laundry mat.

Here's a pro tip, merino wool socks and underwear. You can wear them for like 3 days and they don't stink because they're antimicrobial. I mean, most people probably wouldn't want to wear underwear for 3 days but if you're in a pinch or you're hiking, it's very helpful. Just wash them in a sink, and they air dry super fast. Merino wool is very soft, very breathable, but it also keeps you very warm in the winter.

We used to wear a lot of merino wool clothing in our early travels (2016). Some of our socks are merino wool, and ultra breathable! Like you, we definitely recommend them to other travelers!

Agree so much. I just came home from a travel and 5 out of my 18 pieces of clothing were thin merino wool (of which 4 were underwear, and 3 were thin tights). I dont have any merino underwear. Hmm, I am going to get me some! I LOVE travelling with cabin luggage only. The freedom both in terms of not being apart from you luggage, and in not hauling many superfluous things around, is addicting. ❤

Merino shirts are practically the only shirt I wear anymore. They’re great for traveling because you can wear them for several days so you don’t have to pack as many. Also they’re very easy to wash in a sink and will dry quickly on a hanger. Plus they come in different weights (thickness) so you can pack according to anticipated temperatures.

Jana, those collapsible storage containers are a LIFE SAFER! 🥳 When I go through airports I like to get salads at the Farmer's Fridge and they are often out of takeout boxes which makes it nearly impossible to eat the salad. I can fit one of the Farmer's Fridge salads in the 40oz containers you recommend perfectly, and it was so much easier to eat out of than the usual cardboard takeout boxes. THANK YOU! 🙏

For travelling, I have a little "just in case"-pouch. Over the years, I have started to add things that I would have needed at some point. Some of the things it contains: Headtorch, bottle opener, rubber bands, a tiny pair of scissors, a couple of clothespins, a pencil sharpener, sellotape, gluestick, a little lint roller, an emergency tampon, a nightlight (I hate sleeping in rooms that are pitch-black, especially if I don't know them), a multiple plug, a tiny tripod, folded plastic bags, a mini-screwdriver, and also two of the things you mentioned: spices and a sewing kit. I used to have a lighter, but it got confiscated at one airport. Interestingly, I once had a small Swiss pocket knife in the pouch, because I had forgotten to take it out after a non-flying trip. I flew handluggage only from Spain to Germany, and it remained unnoticed. On the way back, at the German control point, they made me take it out and measured the blade. It was short enough to be allowed on the plane, which I found a bit strange. About the collapsible containers: I have one of these, and I'm not one hundred percent convinced. Because they are not rigid, they easily get crushed in a bag when containing food. I once used them for "empanadas" which didn't look their best when I finally got to eat them. With liquid food, I'm always worried that the little cap of the microwave hole might pop out and food will spill out.
@AplinsintheAlps
@AplinsintheAlps 2 жыл бұрын
Very interesting! That sounds like a pretty full pouch, but I love how you add things as you need them! We do keep a bottle opener and headlamp in our tech bag (which Brett carries so it wasn’t featured here in this video). And the containers have been absolutely wonderful so far! But we don’t put liquids in them (I don’t trust those lids for liquids) and we haven’t had a problem with them getting compressed because the seal actually makes it so they can’t compress easily while the lid is on (so you pretty much have to take the lid off to collapse them, which makes sense).

I just did 2wks with only a carry on but stayed in one place, so it was easy to get to the laundromat as I only needed to wash once. I say you can always tell a seasoned traveler because their luggage gets smaller and smaller every trip.

Great video! Another tip is to take a photo of what you take, and another when you get back of only the things you found essential , and the clothes you wore all the time. @@almaortega9261 From a health/sanitary standpoint, there is nothing unsafe about washing a reusable fabric pad with the rest of your laundry. I wouldn't necessarily add them to a load of whites, but it's time we got over being squeamish about such things. Now, if you're talking clothing with feces on it, like your kid had an accident, then you would want to wash those items separately.

Wonderful. I agree with everything except for shopping bags and spices. Yes, you have to pay for them, but they're very cheap and not worth taking with and then having to worry about not losing or tearing them. And you can get great spices all over Europe for very good prices. The only things you can't get are specific blends like Lawrys, Bay seasoning, etc. But countries in Europe have some nice blends of their own.

The one for the other 3 seasons is the Exofficio. Both have 11 pockets configured specifically for travel. I love both of them. Most days I just wear the vest and then carry a water bottle tote, crossbody. That works well and I can swap shoulders if it gets bothersome. I have never had any problem with customs or TSA. I just tske the vest off, put it in a tote and send it thru the scanner. One very Important tip is to go up a size when buying a vest. Thanks for the great video! From my side I can suggest adding a hydration pack to the luggage - it's basically a plastic pouch with a tube that you can fill up with water. I found it way more convenient than bottles as they take no space when they're empty, and tap water is drinkable in most European countries, so you can just fill it up when needed instead of buying the bottled water. Very convenient for hikes too as you can put it in your backpack too, and are able to drink without using your hands or having to take of the backpack :) Somebody already mentioned solid shampoos and conditioners, another thing I can suggest is to find cosmetics that can have multiple purposes - solid shampoo can double as a soap, a natural oil can be used as body oil, hair conditioner and make up remover. I second the reusable menstrual products - I've been using a menstrual cup for 4 years now and it's the best purchase I've ever made!

Very cool! Either way, carry-on is the way to go (especially with those train aisles and cobblestone streets in France!)

You’ll never go back to checking luggage. Especially if you go to Europe.

Some good ideas. I usually wear a heavy sweater with a zipper on the airplane. A scarf is something I like to bring as well. That way I don’t need to pack it. Plus airplanes are often cold. I also take a collapsible plastic dryer with clips to hang hand washed underwear and socks. How do you carry a sewing kit with needles on an airplane? Also, do you ever have a problem because not all your liquids are in a quart bag? I buy dried herbs in the market at my destination. I also like fresh Basil and garlic which also can be bought in the market. I like using plastic packing bags to get more things in my carry on. I use a large Lesportsac purse as my personal item. I put my iPad, phone, wallet, prescriptions and jewelry in it. I suggest a money belt. Eagle Creek has a good one. You can put your money, cards, and passport in it. You wear it around your waist and under your clothes. It keeps your valuables safe.

Great ideas! I’ve never had trouble with the sewing kit but it’s a basic kit so the scissors and needles are fairly dull. And I do put liquids in a bag when flying, otherwise they live in my toiletry bags. Also, I’m a fan of fresh herbs too!! 🙂

Great video. I love the laundry sheets. I had been looking for some to take with us on our trip out west this fall. What do you use as your personal item. I was going to take a back pack, but I love the idea of the one you have. Maybe I could actually take my camera bag now and get the back pack you have for when we get there.

Those laundry sheets are pretty incredible, and so convenient! I only fly with my Away carry-on suitcase and my mini Travelon purse. I don’t have a personal item (although sometimes I carry a few small souvenirs in the packable daypack on our flight home). Since we travel for 4-6 months at a time, we try to pack light! The packable daypack could be an excellent option for your trip out west! Where will you be visiting?

I've used a backpack as a personal item and the carry on rolling case as my main suitcase. I packed for 10 days in Germany that way in 2019 during the summer.
