To comment on the bubble wrap; I once sent an oil painting wrapped in acid free brown paper with bubble wrap and I had the bubbles in. When it got to it's destination, the varnish had taken on the circles on the bubbles. Luckily I was able to correct it for them when I was in their area a couple weeks later. So yea, no more bubble wrap faced in, and I put a piece of cardboard between the first layer and the bubbles :p

Great vid! :) Of course you have to see the expenses of the packaging in relation to the piece. If I were to send out my paintings, which are smaller scale, and with a totally different price range, that polycarbonate sheet will already be quite expensive. But I reckon either a wooden board or 2-3 layers of cardboard might work too. Also love the added information about the certificate. Would love to see a whole video on details like that, the paperwork and personalizing the delivery of the product to the customer.

The plastified card that they use for outdoor signs and election posters works much better than cardboard. It's much more rigid, but the same weight and doesn't absorb moisture. Very cheap too (during election season!)

Hi Brian. All I do is double the price the client paid for each artwork for insurance purposes. Generally speaking, that allows for future inflation as well as covering the costs of replicating what they’ve purchased in the event they have to make a claim. No valued or auction house required!! Hope that helps.

Hello, I really loved this video, especially how simple the steps were. I've also just finished watching your video on packing large pieces for shipping in crates. I was wondering if you could please do a video on packing medium to large mixed-media art pieces ( art work has slight protrusions about an inch from the surface of the canvas) and how best to protect them. Also what are the merits of using packing peanuts instead of bubble wrap? Thank you so much.
@SwarezArt3 жыл бұрын
Glad it was helpful! I don't have anything that fits the mixed-media criteria so could prove to be tricky. No real difference between peanuts and bubble wrap in my opinion - only one is less messy! I really have to sit and think about the protrusions - not sure how to approach that...

Have you calculated how much material cost is used to ship a painting that size? When you make sales do you add shipping costs or do you include that in the paintings price and therefore offer it as free shipping?
@SwarezArt2 жыл бұрын
Hi Trevor. Normally, shipping is NOT free as it can cost a lot of money for a big painting (depending on where in the world it's going). So I do quote for shipping once I receive an enquiry. Free shipping at some of the size I sell could cost me 40% of the ticket price depending on location - ouch!! Goodbye profit! What I try to do is offset and subsidize where I can to lessen the impact for a client - but everything begins with a conversation. I treat everyone in their own unique way as each circumstance is different. I always focus on how I can do the best for someone. Sounds contrite but it's just a simple mantra. Hope that helps...
@trevordupp87342 жыл бұрын
@@SwarezArt Thanks for responding so quickly - follow up - do you ever send your paintings unstretched and then the client would get it stretch once it reaches the destination - you do some pretty large peices.

The price 23 pounds is about $29 USD. But the lowest price I can find is $48 USD plus tax would make it $51.38 for s sheet. To me it isn't worth the cost to protect the painting. If I did a painting the same size you just did it pretty much cost $50 USD plus to protect the painting. So the cost in the US isn't worth it. People need to remember here in the US everything is over priced. Because everyone want's the US dollar why I have no idea the pound and euro are worth more if you ask me.

Love your demonstration. I also do large paintings for acrylics but I also do watercolor at another 11x17 with a 3-4” May around. I was making crates for everything to ship from old pallets (which I got for free as toss offs). I do use bubble wrap and newsprint or vellum directly on top of the painting; definitely cardboard then. What you do makes sense; less expensive to ship than crates which FEDEX/UPS won’t take. I have to use private truckers when I crate which can be expensive. I recently found some moving companies will help if they have a run to the city you need. But you have to make sure you have some One on the other end. Thank you for the presentation and not drawing it out. Cheers 🍻

Thank you for taking the time to make this video, you have just solved so many issues for this big canvas painter! I have been trying to figure out how to ship without using expensive crates/professional crating services or make custom sized boxes! (Wood is outrageously expensive here in the US right now with the supply shortages, this is BRILLIANT!) Question: how do you instruct your clients to OPEN this package without ripping the canvas with a blade or cutting tool? I know the next set of questions sound silly and obvious to ask but I am constantly surprised about the damage I have seen with clients opening boxes with cutting tools. Could one accidentally cut through the backside far enough into the front and rip the canvas? Do you place a label indicating which side to open from? Would you recommend sending an email to the client with instructions on how to safely open this kind of packaging? Again, it’s obvious to artists what to do but I want to provide safe unwrapping instructions to a potential first time buyer. Thank you for your time and job well done explaining this process, thanks!
@SwarezArt2 жыл бұрын
Hi Robin. Easy answer is to send them a little video from your phone! I always recommend they cut with a blade across either of the flat surfaces. All they need avoid is the sides. That's it! @SwarezArt4 жыл бұрын
For this size I can get away with it as it is. Realistically, anything above 180cm on the longest side needs to go in a crate. For over-sized freight like a crate I will have to complete a commercial invoice, declare my EORI number (for pre-clearance in the UK), declare my HS code (for zero rating of sales tax) and authorize the US agent to issue a Power of Attorney form to act for the client the other end. This is normal for crated goods but not always necessary for packaged ones like the video shows. Because of its size I can usually book through a major courier and they do all that in their booking process. Hope that helps... Packages = easy. Crates = nightmare!

Might be best to check the tech specs of the mediums you are using to be on the safe side. I don’t see any issue with sticking so far as your paint is fully cured and not liable to remain tacky. Hope that helps.

Great vídeo I would like other vídeo about the way you get your clients without publicity of an art gallery would be interesting

Thanks! There's a lot of info on the channel about this which is contained in other videos. It is always the hardest problem for artists but is very achievable. I will do a video just on finding clients very soon.

Do you insure your packages before sending them off or is that the buyers responsibility and the purpose of your insurance valuation?
@SwarezArt3 жыл бұрын
I always insure them when I book with a courier. They normally offer an option so I take it. But beware - some companies don't insure art! Read the small print!!

It's good to see somebody from the UK. My art is not overly large, but I do use foam wrap, bubble wrap and then I use really thick bin bags. I think maybe a polycarbonate sheet is a bit over the top for me, but I can understand that if you are sending abroad you need that extra security. Regarding the bubble wrap thing, I have always wrapped with the bubbles inside and haven't had any problems as far as I know because the foam wrap is protecting the painting. I think in future though I will wrap with the bubbles on the outside. I sent a resin piece out one time and was so worried about it that I put some thin card against it which will sort the problem. One really needs to think about the cost of packaging, which is quite high when you take it all into account, particularly the foam and bubble wrap. Just have to ask a lot for shipping I guess. Thanks for sharing your tips.

Wow.....this was one of the best vidoes on packaging. I have one question. I am a new artist and I''ve not sold anything yet but when I do, I also do alot of heavy textured and light textured artwork. What would you do differently to protect this type of art from chipping.
@SwarezArt4 жыл бұрын
No I would do exactly this method. If in doubt just increase the amount of anti static foam wrap. Thanks for your kind words.

I'm planning on sending my mother one of my recent paintings and I'm paranoid of it getting dinged up. Thanks for the video!

This is a system that works well Debra and we still continue to use it in this way. I'm sure it will be fine!

Thanks for sharing, very informative. For the bubble side out, I was just watching a video from a gallery that was saying the same as you. How much would all the packaging material cost for this painting?
@SwarezArt3 жыл бұрын
I'd day around £40 approximately. Hope that helps.

You sell paintings with the backing like that? I have a few pieces that are nice but I’m nervous about the back being such a mess
@SwarezArt3 жыл бұрын
Yes I do! The front is the important thing. The back shows the journey!

For sure, bubbles on the outside! It will leave marks in certain mediums. For encaustics we also do it on the outside.

Thank you for your incredible videos!! I'm an interior designer, recent empty nester and have picked up my paintbrushes after 25 years of not using them!! My goal is to create custom pieces for my clients and who knows, maybe it grows from there. I am binge watching your videos and have learned something from every one of them. Your work is stunning and you are inspiring me to just do it and not be afraid to try and experiment with different mediums, techniques, etc. Keep the videos coming please!!

Thank you for all you do. It has been quite trasnformative and iteratively informative as I have learnt techniques, approaches to taking your art to the next level and so on. I am curious if there is an opportunity to get involved more closely in the learning process, like a closed group, subscription and so on. Thank you, again.

You are very welcome, glad we could help. There isn't any closed group or learning circle - that's why we have KZbin. But if that ever becomes a thing I will let you know!!!

Great video, can you please tell me which courier will take such a large parcel, as I find the mainstream firms all have smaller size limits?
@SwarezArt3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the feedback! I normally use a comparison site for each parcel so that I can match the right service for the client and country. There are definitely limits so if you are sending something very big then try searching for a local shipping agent as they will move in these areas where larger freight services are required. There are also comparison sites that specialize in big parcels (like Parcelcompare) etc.. Hope that helps.

Thanks for this video. I have shipped several paintings across the US and always worry about them being damaged. No issues so far, but your method of packaging your work seems just about foolproof. Cheers!

Is the anti static foam wrap safe to be against the face of oil painting when shipping even in hot weather? I've heard bubble wrap can melt on a canvas and I want to make sure I don't ruin it with anything (new to shipping as an artist)!
@SwarezArt4 жыл бұрын
I think they would have to get very hot for the plastic to melt (of any kind). I have never had any problems with anti-static foam. Hope that helps...
