I often do a master copy of one of JS Sargents works before I start a new human portrait. It gives me an opportunity to learn something new before I tackle a commission. That’s absolutely breathtakingly beautifully done I was asked to do a portrait of a beautiful German Shepard dog and my fear kicked in. I have never painted a German Shepard dog before but I have drawn them but yours portrait is gorgeous.

She is Gorgeous! My Dream Dog! Will you varnish this for your client? How long will you let it dry before varnishing? Also , third question, What color did you use on the tongue to make it shine?

The tongue was a combination of burnt Siena and alizarin crimson and white. Then I did the warmer parts of tongue with cad red and white.

Oooops. Didn’t finish….the. I used white to do the highlights in the wet paint. That created the shine. The area around the mouth (lips) I used ultramarine blue, a little burnt Siena and white to make a bluish gray to do those highlights. Thanks so much Abby for your support. I grew up with this Breed. They are awesome. As for varnishing, I used very little paint thinner….And only a little linseed oil so it’s got a consistent finish mow. I may varnish it if needed bit I feel it will be fine without
