This is awesome! Will use this for my cuatodes project. Gw crimson wash must be the same as the red ink right?
@dekai79923 жыл бұрын
The Citadel wash is more blueish, more like a slightly desaturated magenta. If you want the same tone, a mixture of roughly 3 parts red, one part blue and one part black ink should come close. Using pure red ink would be fine as well, of course, to get a more saturated look.

@Barthilas14 жыл бұрын
The golden color is more like 5:1, i myself went with 3:1 and the color was way too copperish/bronze. Tried 4 and still way too dark for my liking. I am still newb in this area so it might have been error on my end, but 5:1 works for me.

Do you use a varnish at the end to protect these awesome paint jobs? If so what do you prefer?
@RobPaintsModels6 жыл бұрын
I only use varnish to change the specular properties of the surface since I don't get to play much. The Custodes I didn't varnish because it would either dull the gold or gloss the red/black and I liked the finish as it was.

What do you put in your metal paints to make them flow so well, whenever i paint metallics they dry sooooo fast.
@strogger70404 жыл бұрын
Do you use a wet pallet? I highly recommend it. They are super easy to make, and you can look it up on KZbin. You could also go to your local art or hobby store and buy one. A wet pallet will definitely help your paints to not dry out.
@Dimanti884 жыл бұрын
@@strogger7040 I do use a wet pallet, but it's really difficult to get the right consistency for metallic paints, to much water and the metal flakes only go into the recesses, to little and the paint dries to quick.

Hi Rob, great video/s and I was wondering what you used once you finished the model? Do you use a gloss varnish or 'ard coat to protect the minis? Or do you have any advice on what would be best to use?
@ThYr0N3 жыл бұрын
Hi Rob! I really want to use you're video to paint my Custodes by I'm finding that the mix of 3 to 1 of Gold and red ink from Vallejo gives a totally different gold (almost bronze) color. Are you sure is 3:1? or is more gold? Thanks .
@RobPaintsModels3 жыл бұрын
It can vary between batches and how hard of a squeezer you are so experiment until you find a method that you like. I suggest if you're doing an army then you should mix up a large bottle of your specific paint so you don't have to keep repeating it.

Thanks for the video! Will you do Shadowkeepers or Solar Watch armor guide?
@RobPaintsModels7 жыл бұрын
For Solar Watch I suggest using the process from the Stormcast Eternals video I made for Shadespire and painting in the gold with Liberator gold. Shadowkeepers are basically just the Guardian Spear section but all over their armour.

Great video. How did you apply the varish though?
@nEsniAi5 жыл бұрын
This is the first time watching your video, and it’s great with good clear steps. My only complaint is that with your Vallejo paints it’s not clear what number they are. With your paint list at the start you give the names but, if that’s the numbers underneath them, it’s not clear enough to read them. After watching the whole vid I had to go through again a few times to the part where you showed the paint pot, and quite often you just showed it for a split second. Showing the paint pot so quickly would be understandable if the numbers had been clearer earlier. With GW paints all the names are distinct, whereas with Vallejo some of the paints share the same name, hence why they have distinctive numbers. So for quick reference it’d be good if those numbers could be bigger and clearer at the start. Thanks! Keep up the good work.

Very nice work, love it. Using the gloss wash really works wonders. Would your process for Grey Knights be similar to this (adjusted for colors obvs)?
@RobPaintsModels6 жыл бұрын
You could use this process for Grey Knights as well. Vallejo Metal Colour Silver is incredibly shiny when applied with an airbrush so I'd suggest going for one of their darker metal tones like Steel and highlighting it with their Silver or Chrome. The process with the gloss varnish and the wash though would be the same. I suggest my armour wash recipe from my Shadespire videos.
@iQuitGirls996 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the reply! Sounds simple enough, although I can't deny I'd like to see you put out a video for Grey Knights, if only because I find your videos oddly therapeutic.

Hey Rob. I've come across a problem when sealing a mini before applying washes. I'm currently working on a primaris dread and have based the metallic parts. I then airbrushed on a coat of vallejo premium airbrush colour acrylic gloss varnish and let it dry (so far so good...) When I applied the wash sort of 'loosened' the varnish coat and it began to peel with each brushstroke. Do you know what's happening? Is it possible that I need multiple coats before applying washes? Thanks!
@Critical6776 жыл бұрын
Hi! Great video. So for the varnish...does it gave to be a gloss varnish or can you use a matt varnish to get the same effect with the gloss shade? Does this work with normal shade too? Thank you!
@riik6666 жыл бұрын
It has to be gloss varnish to properly break the surface tension - matt varnish won't do it. And a gloss varnish will make ALL shades/washes perform better by reducing pooling/staining on the larger, flatter surfaces. As a happy bonus, gloss varnish gives the best protection for all that initial delicate airbrush work as well. Just make sure to hit the model with some matt varnish right at the end to get rid of any unwanted glossy bits. Hope this helps!
@Critical6776 жыл бұрын
riik666 thank you! :)

@Sterron0627 жыл бұрын
In the Shadespire series, you often used a mixed “armor” wash to shade your steels/silvers, but it seemed that you used standard shades to mix it, where as here you use a gloss shade over a gloss varnish for the gold. Have you tried mixing your armor wash using Nuln Oil gloss and Agrax Earthshade gloss? If so, is there a reason you’d recommend the standard shades over the gloss shades in your previous videos?
@RobPaintsModels7 жыл бұрын
I only use the Gloss versions when I want the decreased surface tension so the wash doesn't stain the flat surfaces at all. I don't always want that for Armour wash so I don't use the gloss versions. If I need decreased surface tension in a regular wash I usually just add a little bit of the Pledge in the video and that does the trick.
@Sterron0627 жыл бұрын
RobPaintsModels Thanks for the insight! I’ll have to try experimenting with both methods!

Blixten Hello, my advice would be to let your collection of models dictate the pace at which your collection of paints grow. Buy an army, pick a scheme and then stick to it. Your paint collection will grow and you’ll get more familiar with it. Don’t buy unnecessary paints you’ll regret it!
