Hi Loralynart, thank you so much fir watching my video and it means so much to me that it helped. I always look to get big easy folds when I am photographing the model. That helps too. I love that you enjoyed the comedy in this one, it was fun :)

Hi sir, I love how you drew the fabric there. Other people already mentioned a voice tutorial so I won’t double up. I’m going to see if you made new videos on folds with that but if not I personally would love to see a tutorial like that. I personally get overwhelmed with the details in folds and don’t know where to start when I look at one. I know some light and shadow basics but when I paint I struggle to manipulate the edges to make the texture look real. On another note, realistic is nice but some artists can depict the texture with just a few strokes and really simplified brushwork, I’m wondering how they do that?

Hi Rebecca, thank you so much for checking out my video. This is currently the only video of mine that concentrated on folds but I will make a new one soon. Folds can be difficult. Its best to first look at the big shapes broken down into values between light and dark. Then you may look for the mid tones. As you have those 3 values in the folds, then look how the edges are between those 3 value (either soft or hard edged). After that is done, look for the dark accents and the highlights.

Thank you s much for this video. If the light is coming from behind, as in a curtain being blown by the wind through the window, will the highlights and shadows be reversed? Meaning .. the creat will be darker and the troughs will have the highlights? It is only now that I am learning how to paint/ draw draperies. Will appreciate your response.

Hi How are you? The light always travels in straight lines from the light source and hits the object on the light facing side of any object, including the curtain. In backlit situations, like a cresent moon, only a sliver of the ligt with be visible. There is a wonderful book you should picj up, "Light for the Artist" It will help you so very much and I red tis book at least once a year.

Very nice rendition of folds! Could you tell me a bit more about the Gun Metal paper? I recently used Strathmore Mixed Media Toned Gray paper and had a huge amount of issues with oils from my fingers. I had washed my hands, covered my right (drawing) hand with glassine and still the paper got tiny greasy marks from my left hand. It was a nightmare as I had sold the piece before completion. Just wondered what your thoughts were on the Canford paper. Is it like Canson Mi-Tientes? Smooth or like Cold Press? Thank you so much.

The song at 8 mins is beautiful. Can anyone tell me who it is? Shazam doesn’t know. Thanks. Great demo btw. And I think your intro regarding the heat was hilarious, it’s summer in Australia right now and I will be happy in March 👌🏽

I thought this was supposed to be about painting as well. All I saw was drawing. I wanted to know how to actually paint draperies.

Hi Paula, thank you so much for your comment. As I teach my students, I instruct that the difference between drawing and painting should not be so different, conceptually. The best take away while painting or drawing folds is to start with the larger shapes first and gradually move into the details, sticking with that process. Jean Auguste Ingres, stated that " Drawing includes three and a half quarters of the content of painting... Drawing contains everything, except the hue."

You have to know how to draw them before you can paint them because when you paint them, you are drawing them and you wont have lines to follow like in this video. if your doing it in watercolor, you will have to plan all your brush strokes before you even get your brush wet and you will literally have just a few minutes to do it. You light values will have to come from lifting paint while it is wet.
