Natural black has either a brown or blue tinge to it. It is useful to do an undercoat of that color, then use Payne's Gray (blue tinge) or Umber (brown tinge) as the deepest shadows. I think your painting is gorgeous as usual.

Oh yes! Payne’s Gray is another EXCELLENT option I forgot to mention here - thank you for this 🖤

This is a stunning painting Anna! Thank you so much for sharing this with us. That is such a great trick to get the blacks mixed, exactly the way you want them to be.

Hi Anna, wow, wow, how magnificent is this Toucan painting! I understand why it is not necessary to use black when you can obtain beautiful results using different blues and paynes gray. You are such a beautiful and talented artist! I love this panting❤ Thank you. Helene

Anna, it would be very interesting to see you test your theory about using pure black with a side by side comparison on the same subject. In the photo reference that you showed, the toucan did look much blacker than in your painting. That being said, your painting is beautiful, and as you said, it may appear more three dimensional than if you had used pure black. I just think it would be interesting to see how the toucan would look if you did use pure black. Just a thought, as always, thanks for your wonderful quick tutorials.

Gorgeous painting! I love how it turned out using blues and purples, but it would be interesting to see a side-by-side comparison with it done using black, so we can see the differences.

Another approach would be to mix your own blacks. And selecting various pigments mixed together that create black. Using this approach, you can vary the color within the black by varying the individual pigment’s strength. I have been experimenting with the combination of the secondaries: PV23 is the most important as it comes close to black on its own +PG7 &PO71. Transparent, big stainer, good to exc lightfastness, and variable in tone. Lots of fun! Maybe you could share some blk. recipes in a vid. I would love to see a few of your favorites! Thanks for your beautiful demos, SARA.

Thank you, Sara. I discuss this approach around 7 minute mark, including some of my favourite combinations 😊

I think you need to consider the background color as well when you are creating three-dimensional form and filling shadows in. When white is in the background, a severe black, maybe put somewhat harsh together.

This looks so beautiful.😍😍 Thank you for the video. When I had painted a black and white bird using black straight from the tube, the result was so muddy...and might I say ugly. Thank you for the tips, I'll try them out in my next painting ❤❤

I struggled last month with two black and white pets. I need to add indigo blue for the blue/black dog. The white/tan/black was easier. I'm currently working on a black baby goat. (My family has lots of pets😅) Eventually I'll get to my Quaker parrots. I painted them about a year ago, but waited until my skills improved to try again. I can't say enough about how beautiful your paintings are. Thank you for inspiring me. 💕

Your distinctive, very controlled sryle shines through once again. I like the indigo being used for the darkest segments off the painting, but i still want t it darker, What if you did your technique and then added b🎉lack touches at the end? I may try that soon. Thanks for your great tutorials
@AnnaBucciarelli3 ай бұрын
Thank you Mary! Definitely add pure black - it would mix seamlessly as Indigo already contains black, and you’ll have some room to build up super dark details on top 👌🖤
