I had fun doing your color chart idea yesterday. Princeton Neptune round #4 ended up being the weapon of choice. Good teaching excersize for a few techniques.

I love doing colour charts. And they do make the job a lot easier 😀

I use both fabriano artistico and canson xl for practise like this. Word of advise for beginners; If your paper does not like the blending part, try stretching your paper. Stretching means soaking your paper till it is dripping wet then put them on a drawing board and taping it down on all sides. This will give your cheaper paper more workabillity than when not stretched. This practise would be awesome with a diy diecut passepartout for fall and winter cards and gifttags. And best part; don't tell yourself you can't. You can do this with crayola. No one saves those cards for a life time. I save them. But I know how much love goes in those cards but it is in a binder. If you're scared to do this with watercolor try it with wc markers. Beware that red does tend to turn pink with markers as that is mostly liquid ink. Remember; less is more when it comes to cardmaking.

I will try this (the stretching)! Question: what do people mean exactly when they talk about “sizing” of the paper?

I never stretch my paper. No need

@@helencampbell I’m going to try it on paper with one side that is fine but the back side does not absorb paint, it’s too smooth. I took a pad of watercolor paper and turned it into a sketchbook and I think I used cheap Strathmore paper.

If you don't have a grey, mix a brown and ultramarine. All browns in the burnt umber or burnt sienna will work for this. If you have shaky hands you can cheat a bit and use a micron pen, art is supposed to be fun. This is not art gallery level work, just enjoy the process. Synthetics brushes I use are royal and langnickel. I use those simply bc I don't want animal fur to be on my brushes.

They look so real and the highlights are fantastic. Do you use the rough or smooth side of your cold pressed paper.? I have so far only used hot pressed. 🙂
