I also find a deep red or a red/brown colour works well as a shade for most armour colour and adds great definition, even straight up on a lighter mid-tone base. Wonderful stuff 👍

You really are growing as a artist and a painter. It's amazing seeing you apply other technic and painting fundamentals. Color theory, texturing, volumetric lighting and etc. Keep it up!

Thank you 😊 I also feel like I am improving, but it is nice to hear that people notice as well 😀 Lots to still learn, though!

Blue is such a challenging color; I love seeing how you build this up. There’s just so much awesome texture and depth to it.

Love the idea of using different colors as shadows. Really makes enough of a difference to make it worth if

Love the video, the example and the final model. Is there any rule of thumbs for picking the color for the shadows? I'm considering doing something similar but with red as the final colar i was thinking about using purple as the shadow color but not a 100% sure on that

Purple or blue shadows work quite well with Red :) The best way to figure out what shadows to use for a color is to look at a colorwheel. Usually, colors that are close to complementary to the one you want the shadow for, work well. Like purple for orange or green, for example. Blue or purple work for red, and it works the other way as well. Red is a good shadow for blue.

Nice work. I can never decide whether I prefer the smoothness of the airbrush or the texture you can achieve with the brush. I've been taking forever to decide what approach to use for my infinity o-12 models 😂

Most of the time, the answer is to use a combination of both :D Some texture with the brush and some glazing with the airbrush. But sometimes it is good to try just one or the other for practice :)

Great work, one of the best Ultramarine tutorials I've seen. Have you tried covering the mini in a grimy wash, wiping most of it off then continuing to highlight from there? Have seen Richard Gray do it and the results look awesome. Also, where would you use an airbrush here? Just for basing and the glazing?

Richard is one of my favorites as well. I have seen his contrast medium technique, but I haven't tried it myself yet. I almost feel anxious when I watch him do it. It looks like it will just dry on him before he finishes removing it :D But you can't argue with those results:) As for the airbrush, I would use it for smoothing out the transitions, like I did on the NMM armor I did in the previous video. Or I would use it to establish a base color and mid tones and highlight and shade from there.

Awesome Tutorial. :) I will try this witch my BloodAngels. What colour would you recomend as contrasting Underlayer for the Red Armour. 🤔 Purple? Blue?

Both of those could work. I would go with a blue :)

Question is there a certain type of citadel paint pot I have to use to get close
@ph3lansminiatures
@ph3lansminiatures 3 ай бұрын
That is a good question. I don't paint much with Citadel these days, but I think Caledor Sky might be the closest to the midtone here.

how do you get the paint to come off the brush so nice like that?
@ph3lansminiatures
@ph3lansminiatures 5 ай бұрын
It is most likely due to the paint dilution and how I load the brush. The paint should come off the brush smoothly like that. If it doesn't, then something is wrong 🤔

Do you varnish your minis? When I apply matt varnish from Army Painter with an airbrush the highlighted areas lose the contrast. Any recommendations?
@ph3lansminiatures
@ph3lansminiatures 5 ай бұрын
I usually don't varnish my minis. I very rarely play with them, so little chance that I would rub off the paint. Also, I am using paints that have a lot of matte varnish in them ( like AK Interactive or Scale 75) and in my experience, they are quite resistant even without an extra layer of varnish. Maybe something to try out?

Interesting technique. Seems a lot of extra steps just to achieve an equal and better effect you could easier do with a traditional tried method. Each his own.

Absolutely, there is a lot of ways to do space marine armor :) Whatever floats your boat. Out of curiosity, what is the traditional, tried method you prefer?

I am old school, anything that doesn't require an air brush lol. Really hate cleaning air-brushes right now. Blending and shading manually with a crisp highlight. I think I am going to try your scratch method thinking about it.@@ph3lansminiatures
