If you are going for original look that’s the way to do it. If you want it to hold up and not crack or scratch off you need to sand down a little with 240 sand paper spray the bulldog then spray down some primer but add some bulldog to the primer when you are mixing it. Then you add your mat paint preferably. I did many cars with a gloss finish for car clubs and the gloss is very disturbing while driving. I have an 85 el camino that’s been sitting for over 10 years in the sun and the panels are just starting to crack.

I’ve had good results on multiple vehicles using SEM. I went from a light poop brown everything to a two tone black and gray. The results were amazing. I painted seats and carpet with SEM and it took out (covered up) stains and discoloration. I didn’t know at the time to use adhesive promoter but it turned out great.

I enjoyed your video. When I spoke with the guys at my local automotive paint shop about painting my interior trim, they said you won't need the adhesion promoter for this application -it's designed for use on exterior plastics. Instead, they suggest using SEM 38353 Plastic Prep or similar products before shooting color.

Also SEM sells their paint in non aerosol form if you want to use an air compressor and spray gun. I did my Foxbody with the cans but if I ever do it again I’ll use the gun. Great video. One thing to note is that when I researched the process all the info I found also said to go over the panels with a fine scotchbrite pad before spraying.Just something in case you wanted to try.
@ethanwingsit9 ай бұрын
Thank you! In the next garage I’ll have an air compressor setup so if anyone has that I would certainly recommend the spray gun over the cans! For the scotchbrite, I did use that with the soap and water but very possible I was to go over again right before paint, I’ll keep that in mind when I touch them up!

Good video. I’m currently doing a FoxBody with the DupliColor and it’s looking great. The project before this one was a ‘72 240z and the DupliColor burgundy was a direct match and made the diamond patterned interior look brand new. For the FoxBody: Most of the panels and door cards are plastic and easy to work with. I found that the rear cargo/trunk area had lots of deep scratches and scuffs. I used 200grt and got a lot of the surface scratches out but the deep scratches remain. I also learned that since the panels are textured, sanding them too much can create a problem with the finish. That’s why I came to your video in the hopes that maybe there was some light to be shed on this subject of scuff removal with success. I’m struggling a bit with the paint because it seems to bring out the sanding marks regardless of grit. I really don’t want to sand 100% of the panel surfaces to relieve the splotchy issues so I’m a bit stuck at the moment for the panels that had scratches. A couple of things I recommend should you do this again: Hang your parts before you spray them…I learned that spraying on objects that are flat forces you to angle the can downward which can cause spitting and inconsistent spray patterns which can contaminate the coat. As other commenters here mentioned: Avoid Acetone! Acetone melts plastic! I avoided that by simply washing the parts using dish soap and water, wiped parts with denatured alcohol then applied tack cloth right before the spray. Results are amazing except for the areas where I sanded the scratches. My plan is to hit those areas with 400 and feather them in to the non scratched surfaces, wipe down with soap/alcohol/tack then respray. For your door panels: Was it possible to remove the inserts from the back of the panel instead of masking them? Time saver. Sometimes those insets are riveted in so I get it. Was just curious. Thanks again for the content. PS your star studded headliner looked great! Do a video about that install! I’m all in!
@markrogers73048 ай бұрын
Shouldnt have to touch up that often. I used the sem since its better. I do red scotch pad over the plastic, use warm water with a few drops of dawn to wipe down,then instead of acetone(plastic and acetone dont get along) i use denatured alcohol...much more plastic friendly. Then use the bulldog,then primer and then sem color. I did my console about 6 yrs ago and still looks like it was just painted. Im also bad about throwing crap on my console but its held up.
