If you want to freehand the heraldry, and you choose to trace an image onto a shield or something like that, just print it out in the correct size, cut out the image, rub a soft pencil on the backside of the image until the entire back is covered in pencil, tape it onto the surface you would like the image on with the pencil side towards the mini, and then trace the image with a sharp pencil. Once you remove the paper, you will see that the image has been traced to the surface of your model, and you might have an easier time just coloring within the lines. You can easily wash/rub off the uncovered pencil dust when you're finished.

That could work, I just discovered a method of using an app on the phone that overlays a clear image over the camera feed so when you look through the camera, whatever image you choose is displayed over what the camera sees. Will try to use this.

I think the new one looks great but its not the bretonnias we all love. I think for errants its ok. I broke down and ordered decals from Switzerland.

In fantasy (unlike 40k) it's ok to screw up symbols a bit, I'd totally go for freehanding

5:10 Only in 6th edition. 5th edition Bretonnians used all the heraldic tinctures (red, blue, black, green) and the two metals (yellow/gold and white/silver), so as 5th was set before 6th,and TOW is earlier than all WFB editions so far, it's logically fine to use green outside just the green knight (though probably don't paint another knight just green, red and green is an awesome combo that really pops

If that is the way you want to do it, great! I am talking about 6th ed color schemes the way I remember it.

I like the new sword + fleur de lis transfers for small shields and decorations, but not for the main shields and banners. I managed to draw the Aquitaine emblem on the duke’s shield and I’m actually pretty happy with the result.

I am lucky enough not to have gotten rid of any of my 1st ed. Bretonnian army, or accessories such as their sad transfers. They are horribly thin colours with no white under-colour when printed - quite transparent. Let's hope that they do a better job in the future. I am happy(?) that most of the models I have are still waiting to be painted - I never really let myself have the time to paint back then. I was too busy with family and work. Some have yellowed in places from playing games (skin grease) as I undercoat them in white, ready for painting. Now I will have to wash and undercoat them again. Oh, the joy. I hoped they would bring back the arrow formation for the archers - always fun to watch 1 or 2 wounds get taken by the enemy - sometimes even more! I look forward to more Bretonnian focused videos. P.S. You can always get the original transfers printed now that you have an image of the OOP original sheet. Inkjet/Laser transfer/decal paper, coming in white/clear can now be purchased.

I was gonna do crusader crosses on my shields and flags and do the whole army the same paint scheme. Can i still play "competitively" or at tournaments or will the army not be allowed?
@TooMiniModels
@TooMiniModels Күн бұрын
I think that's fine, it would only be an issue if you used third party pieces or models, but paint scheme should be fine.

I’ll concede my knights of the realm to be the same scheme as my Baron but for errants, questing, and grail knights i’ll do individual schemes.

The box art looks like an AOS army, it's even a similar palette to their latest freeguild releases.

I have a question, and I would be so happy if you could clear it up for me: I saw a bunch of videos now that pointed out the the charge (the weapon animals) should always point towards the horses head (as you said), so you essentially have to flip them on one side of the horse. Where is this coming from? Is this a special GW / bretonnian thing? Because heraldrywise it does make no sense to me at all.
@TooMiniModels
@TooMiniModels Ай бұрын
I can't speak to historical heraldry, but if one is going for the box art style then yes, the animals on the charge (shield emblem) should be facing in the direction of the rider. I think this is to create a sense of internal harmony or consistency, as it might be a little jarring to see the rider and the horse facing in one direction but the horse heraldry facing in the opposite direction. Here is what chat gpt said: In heraldic tradition, animals depicted on a knight's horse barding or heraldry typically follow the same conventions as those on shields. The direction in which an animal faces on heraldry is called "attitude," and the standard position is to the dexter (heraldic right, which is the viewer's left). This is generally true for most heraldic animals, as it is considered a more honorable position. However, the specific direction in which an animal faces on a horse's heraldry can vary. It does not necessarily always face in the direction of the horse's movement. The orientation of the animal depends on the design chosen by the individual knight or the heraldic artist. While it is common for the animal to face dexter for consistency with traditional heraldry, there are no strict rules that dictate it must always align with the direction of the horse itself. So, ultimately, it is up to the painter and their preference. Officially, there are no green knights except for the one but alot of people like to make their knights green.

Hi ! I am going to paint my Errantry Crusade army from the Parravon Dukedom in heraldry colors and rules (argent/white, or/yellow, azure/blue, gules/red, sable/black, vert/green, and purpure/purple). Each knight has a first and last name, and I will associate them a unique figure for their shield, with a unique color scheme for each (freehand just like you). The banners will all be under the Parravon's Duke colors though (azure and sable with argent rampant pegasus). I'm still figuring out if I want the barding single color or two colors for each of them.

I will paint my Bretonnians in the following ways: the knight errants, questing or grail knights will be in the old fashioned multi coloured units way. (They aren’t sworn to a lord) My KNights of the realm will be painted in the colours of the lord that they serve so I’ll have a baron with a unit of 9 knights in his colours and 2 units painted in the colours of Parravon and have the duke of Parravon on a pegasus

One VERY important rule you missed: white and yellow heraldry can only be put on a background that is not white and yellow and vice versa. A coloured heraldry (red, blue or black) can never be put on a coloured background of those colour. (See: "Rule of tincture" for a better explanation).

Ok... You have Colors.. Red (Gules) Blue ( Azure ) Green ( Vert ) .. Shades of these colors dont matter its all up to your want. There is a 4th Color Purple (purper) but its reserved on pain of death/excommunication for Royalty with bloodline out of Byzantium/Greek Kings. ( the Catholic and Orthodoxy Schism happened in 1060 because the then Bishop Cardinalli Prefforati of Rome Greggor X, attempted to steal/export Purple Dye out of Byzantium Reserved for the Roman Emperor on the orders of Pope Pious I. The Orthodoxy would exile Greggor. In 1095 Greggor would be crowned Pope Urban II, and would declare a Crusade to Jerusalem that would make its first stop and sack Constantinople .. Colors cant touch Colors ( except very rare cases when 2 shields that are marshaled on to one shield making a new shield representing the new family name that has both ) .. You have Tinctures " Metals " Silver and Gold ( Yellow is Gold, White is same as silver) Tinctures cant touch Tinctures, you cant put silver on gold or white on yellow or vice versa ... Then you have Fur's Sable ( Black ) Ermine (White with black tails and paws) Buff (Tan leather) very rare only ever used for charges ( the emblems) and of course Fur's can't touch Fur's ( except you can have Sable, Charged on top of a field of Ermine.) This is the Most Basic explanation of "La Blazon". The ancient French centered rules and laws that rule the Heraldic libraries and military emblems of all European/Western nations and even Corporate entities.

Exceptions .. The Basqu People of southern Atlantic France, Portugal, and Extremadura Spain commonly put Green and Red together.
