When I was 15 I did a reimagining of the cover for Animal Farm and Ralph Steadman was a huge inspiration to me. Weirdly enough, the year before that I did a huge portrait of my father in the style of Francis Bacon. It seems we have a really similar taste in art folk and that's so cool. I tend to do a lot of meticulous, cutesy, cartoony drawings but when I let myself go and do big messy pieces in black, that's the stuff my tutors tend to like the most. I think I often feel that I should have one style when in reality I actually have about 3 or 4 drawings styles that are all COMPLETELY different. This was so ace dude. I could watch you all day!

No way!! Do you still have them? I'd love to see your darker stuff! I've still got Steadman's version of Animal Farm, I actually looked through it again for this video!

Absolutely love his work! What a great tutorial on how easy, carefree and fun it is to just let loose and make something happen out of a big splatter of ink. It's as if you hastily knocked over the ink bottle and decided not to waste it. I love Ralph Steadman and had no idea who influenced him. Thanks for that tip bit of info. I will go off and check that artist out. I can't wait to try this out! I'll have to Dexter out my kitchen with plastic or something. Too many of these types of tutorials you might need to do the same to keep your camera safe! Thank you. I'm saving this video. Subscribing and liking.

Great job man. Was that watercolor you used directly after the ink? I was surprised to see it didn't make the ink run.
@GuyLarsen7 жыл бұрын
Thanks! It's Winsor & Newton, but the key is the waterproof Indian Ink, which is the same brand. They have one that runs when wet and one that doesn't!

Hi Guy, I love this--Steadman is my favorite artist and I watched this several times. But I have to ask, what is best to use for the splatter technique?? Is that acrylic paint? Black ink?
@GuyLarsen4 жыл бұрын
Thank you Tommy! It's a mix of black india ink and watercolour. Waterier the better, but if you're using water be careful that the paper isnt tilted or it'll naturally run. Thicker acrylic paint is doable too but might give blobby results or close-knit raised domes!
@tommydott43424 жыл бұрын
Thanks Guy. Much appreciated. Was looking for a new project during this creepy time when I came across your video. We'll see how it goes.

Guy Larsen the thumbnail looked like a angry doodled ninja with a red cape to me... I guess it's like the Rorschach test since both are inksplatters
