I know this is an old video but THAN YOU for making this video and for making it in real time and actually talking. So many videos are sped up and just writing on the screen or are like 30 seconds long. Thank you so much. This is the only helpful video I found

I am working on my rusted metal balcony. I cleaned with white vinegar (leave it overnight) the rust is 90% gone. I scraped today the remaining rust with wire brush and paints are peeling off. I clean up the mess, applied rustoleum rust removal (for stubborn rust) and will check tomorrow and hopefully all rust should be gone so I can apply rustoleum combined primer and enamel. But It is a good idea to use the orbital to get a smooth finish of the surface. I am glad that you showed this video. It helps a lot. I will sand this first to get the smooth finish and clean/dry the surface.

I found a metal table and chair set in the trash It's in good shape it just needs paint job thank you for your video
@scotthsmith645 жыл бұрын
Turn it upside down and paint the bottom first. That way you don’t have freshly painted surface pressing against your work surface. Also if you paint the bottom last if the paint runs you have ruined the visible top. Otherwise great video. Thanks!

I’m so glad I came across this video today. I was contemplating on selling my beautiful set that really needs to be repainted. I’ve had it for years, but it is so well-made and still in such great shape just a little ugly looking your video was straightforward and so easy to follow. I’ve just changed my mind and I am going to save myself some money, and repaint Thanks so much.

Spray paint is great and is nice and easy to use. I just finished painting a metal mesh patio table and chairs with Rust-Oleum spray paint and it came out well. However, I think I got as much paint on the tarp as I did on the metal. Rust-Oleum makes regular brush on paint that comes in a can. Next time I will try this paint with a brush and/or roller for this type of job but might use it in combination with spray paint for difficult to reach areas with a brush. I should save a little money but more importantly save time.

Very helpful, my patio furniture was almost identical, but joints at screws were rusted where fasteners were missing. Had to sand by hand as I don't own orbital sander. I used paint/primer combo from Rust-Oleum 2x to avoid having to coat twice.

As a SUGGESTION: My wife has a three place garden bench, that has a Phosphatized finish all slightly pitted and rusted. Instead of using a hand wire brush and scrapper, I would use a round wire brush on a hand drill or low speed mototool. That will get it done much faster and much less tiring! Then, as the wire brush leaves the metal surface TOO smooth for proper primer anchoring, I would use a 120 grit sander, either on a drill, or a right angle grinder or the random orbit sander, but sanding just enough to create an anchoring profile into the too-smooth wire brushed metal surface. On our bench, we will use a different finish paint, called "Rustic metallic green-yellow acrylic enamel, and that one leaves a slight streaks effect when applied with a brush, in the lenghtwise direction, simulating a wood-grain effect.

One or two comments. You did a great job! Do you teach ? You are an excellent teacher. One suggestion: Next time show finished product. I was excited to see it after you were doing such a pro job. Plus I liked the color and wanted to see if overall. This video was also very valuable for me to learn that I could paint plastic. I have some other metal chairs in which the whole seat (attached in a kind of sloop to frame) are (I think) plastic. They may be part fabric? Anyway, sorry I can't send a photo....but I am wondering if I could paint that. I am also wondering if the paint comes off at all if you are sitting on painted plastic? Thanks for this extremely valuable chair painting video!

I noticed that you sanded only the area where you'd removed peeling paint. Is it not necessary to sand the remainder so that paint will stick well? Love the idea of not having to, but wanting to double check before starting our project. The set that we have was given to us (they were throwing it out). It is metal and has been painted over twice I believe on top of the original. Therefore, from what I can tell there are 3 layers of paint on this table and chairs set. Any tips for this?? @guineswiley-nieves176910 жыл бұрын
A Small foam roller paint brush is better. (If i am asked why, I can provide a long list why using a foam roller paint brush is best.) A rust brush on the drill is wiser. Alcohol and cloth is better than water to remove rust dust. Best and only time to Spray ( which is a stupid idea), is early morning when there is no drift caused by wind
@HomeRepairTutor10 жыл бұрын
Thanks Guines Wiley-NIeves for your suggestions. I like foam roller brushes, too. Most of the time I'd agree with you but that would have added a lot of time to the project. The crevices in the chair (between slats and supports) are hard to paint with rollers. So thats one reason, along with the time factor, I chose the Rust Oleum spray :)
@nathantw9 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the video. I followed your steps on a large round table, the legs and 3 out of 4 chairs. After using the wire brush I started sanding with the 60 grit sandpaper and the paint started to come off. Since that seemed to be better than painting over the old paint I continued until there was bare metal. I then went over with 120 afterwards. Each chair ended up taking about 2 hours each but there were areas in the crevices that weren't touched. I'm wondering if it would have been a lot faster (and easier) to just get paint remover and just scrape all the paint off? It would definitely have saved my hand from the power sander. I'm currently on the last chair so at this point I'm just going to spend the 2 hours to sand the paint off. I don't think the wire brush step was needed since the paint was taken off altogether anyway. Also, as I said before, paint remover would be a lot faster to strip the paint off instead of using a sander (and maybe cheaper since I had to purchase the sander and the 50 sheets of 60 grit sandpaper). What do you think?
@HomeRepairTutor9 жыл бұрын
nathantw thanks for your feedback, I'm not a against paint remover but it's a messy job and likely would be more frustrating. Sorry it took so long to do the project, although I will say that might depend on your expectation of the outcome. If you want an absolute perfect looking paint job it will take time. Please send pics to me or post them over on the Home Repair Tutor Facebook Group, I'd love to see them facebook.com/groups/hrtcommunity/

And he should point out that people should be wearing goggles so that metal filings don't fly off the brush and into your eye. I would also do the bottom of the chair first, then flip it up on the blocks. Doing the arms & front first means that the freshly painted surface (which takes a long time to cure) can get messed up when the weight of the chair is on them when they are upside down.
@dakritic6 жыл бұрын
He also forgot to mention that you should have your daily serving of fruits and vegetables and drink a gallon of water a day. Everyones a critic 🙄.
