Holy crap, Dave. You did a great job on those rocks. It’s hard to believe that was your first try. Most guys use heavily diluted washes but I like the way your way let you target different parts of the rocks and then thin it until you get the amount of color you want. Color me impressed.
@Crookedriverandeasternrr2 жыл бұрын
Haha yeah I siding want just black washed rocks. I guess if I had a larger area to cover I may think differently. But I’d rather take my time and individually paint them

Turned out Great Dave, funny how we all do it relatively the same way but we all get different results. I could use the same colors and it wouldn't look as good as yours. I actually threw one out the other day turned out to black. I Gotta water it down some more.

Fantastic finish to it, almost looks like the real thing. Yes your right, rock and soil composites varies, so It's good to check out the area one prefers to model. I found that the rock and soil composites between my area here in Australia and Spartanburg SC is similar, so it's pretty easy for me to do the scenery that will match the rolling stock and ground area I'm modelling. I normally paint them once I have them in place on the layout, as I have these molds ready when I put on the plaster, especially on the cliff faces, while the plaster is still wet. Saves the need to glue it later, and when I paint them up it all blends in together at the same time. But MAN.... I really need to get my butt moving....lol
@Crookedriverandeasternrr2 жыл бұрын
Yeah that’s what I will do as well. This was one of several practice rocks since it was my first attempt at it. I didn’t want to practice on the rocks j have in place already and they turn out horrible. Lol. That casting had a lot of flaws in it too. I’ve gotten much better making them as well. I appreciate your comments and support Arty. Catch in the streams buddy. Thanks

Looks great - I have done this with alcohol washes of various shades over a gray undertone - it runs really nice. It did darken more than I intended to, so I like the...almost a pin wash type technique like you employed - only hitting the crevices vs the whole thing like I did. Well done!
@Crookedriverandeasternrr2 жыл бұрын
Thanks John. Yeah this method is a bit more time consuming tho. So maybe do the wash method on background rocks and this on more up front and visible rock faces.

I tried the plaster rocks idea however found that they were too restrictive in the end result so I went to real shale rocks. Readily available at stone suppliers and easy to cut and split. The weight differential is negligible how ever the result is museum level.
