In this video, I show you a simple technique for painting super realistic rust. This technique only takes a matter of minutes to achieve a convincing result! I used enamel washes by Ak Interactive and Ammo Mig to make this rust effect.

@@smolworldworkshop would it work the same rust effect with white figures (appliances for example) like minus the gray base paint?

@@chdmt_ I’ve never tried it over white, but I think it would work. The enamel washes are very pigmented, so they might be a bit brighter and more vibrant over white. I’d recommend trying it on a test piece first. Hope this helps!!

Hi just came across this and i want to try this for my project. A rusted robot, but i want regular paint to look rusted through. Would you paint your normal colors first and then start your layering, or apply the rust and try to airbrush around it?

I was just looking through Amazon for a way to rust up some 3D prints, which I have no experience with (it's for a gift), and finally decided to look up some tutorials on KZbin, and found this one right away. I love the effect, and that it looks doable by me 😆! I had just been looking at the same AK paints before coming here. I'm wondering if I can use AK's white spirit in place of the X-20. Any thoughts?

Hi there, I’m not 100% sure, but I think it should. The only thing is it just depends on how the wood absorbs the enamel wash, it may look weird if the wood grain texture is pronounced. I’d recommend trying it on a test piece. Thanks for watching!

Hi there, I don’t think so, the enamel solvents would likely melt the foam. I think acrylic paints would be your best bet. I hope this helps :)

@@smolworldworkshop No that's brilliant thanks! I'm making custom stands/bases for some of my 1/6 figures, your videos have been a massive help with regards to painting techniques, rust, weathering, sidewalks 😁!! I do have another question sorry. Would you recommend some sort of clear hardener to coat the surface of the base after painting it!? To protect when standing the figure!? Or am I over thinking there 🤔. The foam base will be protected by a thin wooden frame so it is just the top of the base that's exposed! Thanks

@@michaelchatterton6771 glad to hear the techniques are helping!! I don’t think you have to, but you definitely could seal your foam with a clear coat of some kind, matte mod podge could work, but it sometimes still has a sheen to it. You could also try a matte medium by golden or liquitex. No matter what, though just test it on some scrap test pieces first!
