Lost the premiere, sorry (had to take kids and wife to swimming pool, 38ºC). Great work as usual Byron, congratulations. I see someone asked if wet palettes are overrated... well, here in Spain a wet palette is a great tool, almost obligatory. In hot and dry climates (Spain, Italy, southern France, Southern USA,...) saves lots and lots of paint.

I really like this video. I think the only thing i would change, is i would use Scale 75 Dwarven Gold as the base coat, to avoid running into issues with color consistency in army painting, when mixing those initial colors that you did. That, and save time.
@ArtisOpus

I get the time saving. Honestly though the consistency just isn't a concern, there's enough steps over it that the variance is so diluted/obscured... it's not worth worrying about :)

I see, thanks! I was doing the drybrush of trollslayer orange(I think, the darker of the two between trollslayer and firedragon bright) over the red armour based off your first Blood Angels video. I have never heard of that technique before XD I am planning to watch the vindicators video soon though, I saw the intro and the matte black looks sick. I think colour wise it is not too bright, just that when drybrushing, other than the edges, it also kind of paints other areas I don't want to have the colour on. Like a dusty layer will form on say the armour panel for eg if I am drybrushing a panel edge. I'll try out washing and the eavy metal technique and if I still need help, I'll comment again. Thank you! (I'll also see if I can post a pic online and link it so you can see)

I did a bottle of 50/50 Retributors and the Doombull and came out with a very copper look to the mixed blend. Is mixing it like that a bad idea compared to eyeballing it with a little bit of each when you go back to the pallet? I might try washing it and hitting it with Retributors and see if maybe it still works.
@ArtisOpus
@ArtisOpus 3 жыл бұрын
I love making mixes by the bottle! It's really efficient for army painting - maybe work it out with scroops/drops initially on a palette, then stick to that ratio for the final mix though? I imagine you'd need more like 1/4 or 1/5th doombull. The other issue could be if you didn't shake them thoroughly, before making the mix. What do you think? If you reply with any further questions please do it in a different comment, YT is bad for notifications!

Love the video as always. If you start with retributor spray, would you just use the wash to knock it back and give the depth of the doombull mix or stipple with mix anyways? always like the depth you create when stipple start for basecoat but like the time save of spraying. Thanks! Color request, white or perhaps even the silvers with different wash colors, green, blue, etc.
@ArtisOpus

Great tutorial thanks! Only thing that would put me off is the blocking in afterwards as always end up making little slips on that kind of thing but still might give it a go. A couple of questions though How would a thinned down Gore Grunta wash compare to your recipe? (Was given that tip by an excellent painter in my local group) Would you adapt that method at all for models with more non metallics? Thanks!
@ArtisOpus
@ArtisOpus 3 жыл бұрын
Hey dude, as long as you get the ratio right it'd be fine, you'd need a fair bit of medium but the somewhat shiny finish isn't a downside on metallics really IMO! Not really, they let you get away with a bit more, but you just have to take extra care over light bases, basically. Regarding the blocking up: Just use contrast :D

@ArtisOpus
@ArtisOpus 3 жыл бұрын
Michael, mate, we've all been there! I've taught a lot of lessons, and with me reinforcing some 'non painters' have achieved amazing painting, often really shocking me (and producing very similar results). It doesn't always go to plan, but I bet you'd find the technique enjoyable, plus be pleased with some lovely paint jobs. Start simple, be honest with yourself on what doesn't work, and don't stretch too far, clean and simple on a unit can look insanely good. #1 Don't rush too much, 10% more care makes a big difference #2 Flat basecoats where needed make the world of difference, be patient, 2 thin coats if needed (e.g. shoulder pads here) #3 Have fun! Mistakes will happen, that's cool, learn and move on #4 These minis would be perfect, I couldn't recommend much more in warhammer than these stormcast Any more questions/help fire away! In another comment ideally, as YT isn't great at ongoing convo notifications.

These models look great. I am relative new but am going to give this a shot. I do have a question - I have Vallejo Air Gold - do you think I could use that as my initial gold coat on the armor? Again the model looks great - if mine come out half as good I will be really happy.

Hey man, with these dominion scale minis in mind I'd pick up a Medium+/Large (don't basecoat with it if you just have one!), they're workhorses, and can do best of both worlds, also as one of the most heavily used ones you could always relegate it to metallics if you bought a set as a follow up.

I always get a bit jelly watching detail work. I partially blinded my left eye a couple years back and now lack depth perception. So dabbing in details is an even slower process made worse if painting around other parts of the model. Protect your eyes people.

Sorry to hear it, Lawrence! What do you do to try and work around the difficulties? I've had this mentioned a couple of times in comments, and would love to be able to hand out any useful advice that I could. Is drybrushing a useful technique for you to have up your sleeve? I always wondered, as so much of it is based on feel for me.

@@ArtisOpus I don't know about Lawrence's situation, but drybrushing is how a friend of mine convinced another player that painting was possible for him. The man had chronic shaking in his hands, and fine work seemed impossible for him.

@@LetholdusKaspyr This is amazing! I've spoken to a couple of people with arthritis who've said similar. I think subtractive techniques are also really helpful, as the original application doesn't have to be precise, and the removal is often very tactile, rather than delicate (e.g. wiping off streaking grime carefully with a microfibre). Thanks for chipping in, dude

I’d love to see your take on hallowed knights. Do you think the blue shade technique would still be worth while when most of the model is silver or would it be a case of paint it all silver and then shade the gold areas orange?
@ArtisOpus
@ArtisOpus 3 жыл бұрын
Either fine man, it depends which is fastest/which is the strongest wash look for large areas... I'd tend to keep the washing for the smallest bits on majority models, e.g. trim and details, not huge panels. That's not to say it couldn't be perfected and be a valid, all-over technique for some reason, it makes lovely interesting colours!

Byron - How strong is the two-tone with the gold showing under the 'silver'? It was a little hard to tell from the still shots? I've always tried to avoid doing Silver and Gold together because of the bleed over when trying to paint the two close to each other... but this seems stupidly simple...

I think I understand the question! LMK if not: It all but knocks it back man! Do make sure you hit *everywhere* with 2 washes - I missed a top right scale you can see from rear-view, that's what happens if you miss areas! :D Otherwise man, it's super effective if you get the blue mix correct, you could even use stronger blues/a careful drop of leviadon in there.

Heya. So when I drybrush edges, I notice that sometimes my paint even though its quite dry and little, it still layers over the flat surfaces. Eg, I am trying to drybrush the top of a space marine's backpack for edge highlights, but I end up with a dusty layer across the entire top. Do you have any advise on how to prevent that? Thanks! :)
@ArtisOpus
@ArtisOpus 3 жыл бұрын
Hey man, I presume this is when you have a high contrast? (e.g. black/dark blue - light grey edges, etc) You can take a technique from 'Eavy metal here, it's their 'fat pre-highlight-highlight' (there's no way in hell they call it that). I use this on our Vindictors video, it's a drybrush which feels like a bit of a waste of time, because it's barely any different from the basecoat, but it means that any edging that follows doesn't stand out as much, so gives you a bit of a transition. Another option is to wash the whole thing down. Is that helpful? If not let me know in another comment, YT isn't great for ongoing conversation notifications.
