I save larger dollops of paint by putting into plastic pots with screw tops. You get some wonderful colours if you mix them sometimes. I put blues with blues, greens with greens. And often add white or yellows. These keep in perfect condition for months so far. I just keep adding to them and have a most beautiful bright blue colour and light green I couldn’t get normally. I mixed quino butprnt orange with yellow orcha and wow it’s a lovely golden brown, adding white makes colours you can use also to grade them. Loving this little way to save paint and learn to mix colours without wasting a bit.

oil paint air dries so it will stay wet as long as you keep the air out. I do the same but them fill the pots with water. As water and oil don't mix the water just pours off. You do however need to let the layer of water dry before you start painting though. I usually just put the pot in a sunny spot for a few minutes while I get myself set up. By that time the water is gone and ready to go. You can keep your oil paints for years this way. I have however not tried this with WaMO paints yet sp experiment first before using it with WaMO paints

This video has been super helpful, thank you! Are you adding more, or less, water when you're painting the darker (and highlights) over the midtone? I don't remember hearing you mention that along the way. Or does the fat over lean rule only apply to the subsequent layers over dry paint?
@PaintBasket7 жыл бұрын
when you are painting wet in wet the fat over lean doesn't apply as all the paint is the same "age". You will however find that as you paint you will need to add more water to get subsequent layers to lie on top of the wet paint. You don't however need to add oil into the mix as you do with fat over lean. Let me know if that didn't make sense and I will reword it :)

One thing thst confuses me about painting is the various types of mediums. If someone is brand new to water mixable oils, like me, what medium or mediums should they get? It seems like there are several types for regular oils...linseed oil, sunflower oil, stand oil, etc. Do these all work with water mixable or do you need to buy those that are specially made for water mixable? Would really appreciate anyone's advice.
@PaintBasket3 жыл бұрын

Amazing, thank you so much!!!! Love the way you take the time to explain every detail as you paint. I have never painted in oil before so this is brand new to me and in this 3 hour video I have learned so much. I do have a question I use the same canvas brand when I paint in acrylic do I still have to gesso the canvas when I paint with mixable oil?
@PaintBasket7 жыл бұрын
you're welcome :) Most commercially purchased canvasses come pre-primed so no need to prime before painting regardless of whether you are painting in oil or acrylic :)
@MaryDraws7 жыл бұрын
As long as the canvas you are using is primed, you're fine. Although you can thin these paints with water, they can still rot your canvas if it isn't properly sealed and primed. They are the same as traditional oils but with an additive that allows it to be mixed with water. I realize a lot of people hear "mix with water" and think it's closer to acrylics but they are still oil paints. :)

FYI ... other utube channels say not to use water to thin the paint to use . They say it Dulls the paint and also that the paint looses its integrity and won't hold up . They say the reason for water mixable oils is to avoid using harsh chemicals that aren't people friendly or environmentally friendly . They suggest just using one of the many available water mixable mediums .

You can use medium exclusively, or like I do, use water with progressively more medium in each subsequent layer

I am still confused should i use oil paints water mixable or buy acrylic paints 😔 . Love your painting really beautiful. 💛
@PaintBasket4 жыл бұрын
That is such a difficult question to answer. I am traditionally an oil painter and have always recommended starting with oil paint because of it's long blend time. I have however lately been working a lot more in acrylic and really enjoy being able to instantly dry the paint so that I don't have to wait for it to dry. In an ideal world you would have both oil and acrylic paints. You would then do most of the work in acrylic, dry the painting. Then finish off the fine detail and smooth blending work with oil paint.

You talk about comparing the paint to the ref for colour accuracy but your eye for colour is very lacking. The head and beak have a lot more warmer hues than you caught on to. Your values are lacking too--the ambient occlusion under some of the feathers and in the mouth have just been missed entirely, for example, but there are many areas where you just didn't go dark or light enough.
@PaintBasket6 жыл бұрын
the video does not show the colours accurately. I promise you my colour mixing is very close to the real thing
@jimisimmonds71146 жыл бұрын
You can see the warm/cold difference on the printout you did. If it were the video, the digital overlay would have warm clours on the beak and face and the printout cool, like the photo. As it happens, that's not the case. I'm not saying you're bad mate, you're clearly quite good, but your colours were a bit off here. Have a look at 52:49, and if you need to, use Photoshop to colourpick your paint and then the colours on the bird's face. You'll see yours is teal, whereas the face has a lot of soft pinks and yellows.
