This whole series is great, but this video in particular is revelatory. The power of masks and the value of separating tone from color is described here in a way that has made these ideas clearer to me than they have ever been before (and I have done my share of piddling on paper and in pixels!) Thank you very much.

*Someonsane's* Skull painting is pretty darn amazing, though difficult to follow. Thank you for YOUR clarification here.

Hey. Thanks for the input and feedback. I remember when I first learned this idea, and it was a big deal for me too. If you're looking for more control with your digital watercolors, this is the way to do it, IMO. I actually feel like it makes more sense to me when I use traditional watercolors, now that I've played with the concept digitally. Digital work really allows you to separate tone + color fundamentally, and that helped my understanding of the concept. I'm glad it's been helpful!

Your very welcome! It's been fun and instructive for me too. Come and join us in the Watercolor WIPs thread in the Artrage forums if you get the chance. A great place to share stuff and get critiques and feedback if you want.

I am pretty new at creating digital art. In the past I had fully black areas be replaced by a background layer. In picmonkey the background layer is placed on top...and then "add" replaced the black selected area with a "background" image. I have also used a magic wand to highlight black lines and areas ...and simply erased them to take on the other layer...or...the changed the color of the lines by painting what is selected. Sorry I don't have the terminology for this...but wondering if it can be done with artrage 5.

Thanks for the video. I have been trying out your technique but i notice that AR4 will not select the contents of certain images. It sometimes will do nothing or select around the entire border of the layer. Are there threshold adjustments or some other trick that I am missing?

Hi there. I downloaded Artrage a couple of days ago but I don't find the option to "select layer contents". Therefore I can't have the mask effect. Do you have any clue of what could be going on?

main menu: edit - select layer contents (possibility to invert the selection)

Nice. I was wondering how to achieve a watercolor look without it getting all over the place.
