Hi doc! During the exam, do we only need to mount the typodonts into the manikin head or do the whole mounting plate and jig assembly and mounting. Thank you.

Hello! The typodont set up is location specific. One type has a pre-assembled head and jaw that is connected to the manikin body. The only assembly you really need to do with the first type is to screw in your tooth, place it into the head, and attach the shroud which is just the lower half of the face. The second type involves mounting a jaw to the manikin head, inserting the typodont, and then putting a shroud over the whole head (kind of like a thick halloween mask). That type is a bit more tricky to assemble - definitely go to the in person orientation if you can so you can familiarize yourself with the assembly to reduce pre-test jitters. As far as the sim clinic experience - it is fairly straight forward where you have a manikin unit with air/water/handpiece/curing light hook ups. Check your testing site to see if you will be using

Electric or air handpieces - if you are unfamiliar with one - you may want to find a place to practice with the handpiece type you will be using to make sure you aren’t surprised. For instance - there are weight differences, handpiece thickness differences, torque and maneuverability differences between the two. For sim clinic - they are usually lax on sterilization protocol - but always confirm with the Chief Examiner to avoid mishaps. I generally recommend you have everything you need in a box (see the organization video) so that on test day you can just sit down - open your box - and be ready to go with minimal dispensary trips. I prepared my box and mentally went through each procedure and identified a problem area and tried to obtain materials or equipment to help counter each problem. That way, I would not be surprised by anything that happened on test day. In a lot of respects, that is very similar to treating a real patient - think through all possibilities of a procedure before hand and have something on hand (or have a technique in your mind) to get you out of the problem if it arises. For anterior Endo, how do you measure the tooth. I have a digital Boley Guage which I think doesnot measure quite as good. Do you think it is okay to measure on a regular ruler? How to ensure that the size of access opening is not too small and allows adequate removal of pulp horns?

I used a metal boley gauge to measure - I’m not familiar with the digital boley gauges. To make sure you remove all pulp horns - place your explorer into the chamber and draw the explorer incisally. If you feel and depressions or catches - you can smooth them out with the course diamond hand file method, or whichever method you prefer. Make sure you don’t over-zealously enlarge though! Thank you for mentioning the measurements of how your classmates did the obturation. I read the same procedure somewhere else too. My main concern is for my GP point to stay within the canal. How do you ensure apical seal so that the GP point doesnot go out the apex? Thank you again.

I haven’t looked at the 2023 manual, but for 2022, we did not need to clean and shape the canals

For the molar - yes - but you want straight line access to the canals as well - which means you will need to find them as well. Also, depending on how you interpret debridement - cleaning the chamber thoroughly will allow you to see the canals. But no - you don’t need to instrument the canals. Good luck!
