My student loan debt is paid off. For part of my education, I went to a junior college and I worked part time while I took my classes. Some people made fun of me or looked down on me for not starting out at a four-year college. I wonder how many of those people have student loan debt now.
@soccerchick98417 жыл бұрын
That's the way to go. Pay off as much as possible, while in school. Going to a junior college has helped me so much. I remember after high school everyone is like ''I'm going to university'', and then I would be like ''I'm going to community college'' and everyone made fun of me. A lot of those people ended up transferring to community college, or I bet are in a lot of debt

I did the same, I put myself through community college, lived at home and worked. I was blessed enough to have my parents help me when I went to a four year university. I received my bachelors debt free because I lived at home and went to community college. It blows my mind that kids will pay so much money for freshman English or some of the other gen eds.

Congrats on your degree!! :)

buttrpecan9 It helped condense all of the material that Dave Ramsey talks about in his podcasts. And there's a lot of inspirational testimonies. I'd say yes! I learned the same thing. I have BA and wanted to get my Master's. I recently found a great full time job and decided that I didn't need to continue with my grad degree, so I withdrew and am now focusing on paying down my debt from undergrad. My suggestion: Only go to grad school if your employer will pay for it, or if you're promised a significant raise if you get a graduate degree (and get that in writing!). Other than that, grad school is NOT a necessity, much like college really.

I tell you how you pay for your student loans everytime you are thinking about getting that combo from BK or MCD.. don't and if you are still determined to eat outside the house than just get two things from the dollar menu and the rest of the amount that would have been spent on the combo put it towards the student loan so if that big mac combo costs 5.49 then buy the two items from the one dollar menu and then you have 3.49 to apply to that student loan if you usually eat out 4 to 5 times a month that can be a between 14 to 17.50 a month savings that could also be applied on top of your normal payment to your loans.

Their yearly income is $115,000! They could pay his $30 student loan off in a single year and still be doing quite well with $85,000 left. They're probably spending a lot of money on material things and paying off the debt is taking a back seat. They could even pay it in 2 or 3 years and have significant income left. These people's situation isn't that bad considering they're making great money. They're just probably blowing it.

I didn't catch where they're from. I'm in the DC area and that's not a ton of money given the cost of living, so they aren't necessarily blowing it depending on where they are. 100k is well below the median income in most of suburban DC. The cost of living in San Fran, NYC, DC for example can't be compared to Bismarck, Toledo, or Kansas City. The adequacy of income can't be measured abstractly. I'm feeling the pain right now and am trying to get the heck out and go to Idaho where my making 70k there would give me the equivalent of a 160k life here.

@mattt24188 жыл бұрын
According to Mr. Ramsey, he advocates paying off the lowest principal loan first. Then with that additional money you pay the next highest loan. The effect will "snowball" and allow you to fully attack the highest principal loan last. This is all regardless of the interest of the individual loans.

@Hey_Ruthie6 жыл бұрын
Derrick G that’s what I am starting! One of my loans became over $2,000 higher because I was paying smallest first. Should have done highest interest first.
@derrickg56126 жыл бұрын
Ruthie, I can see the logic in paying off the small loans first and then rolling that payment into the bigger loans, as someone else posted. But I think that only works to an extent. If you have a loan with a 9% rate, then over time you end up paying so much more that it makes sense to pay it off first. There is a psychological element to paying off small loans first. That is, you feel like you're making progress, but for me, saving money in the long run is more of a motivation. I have a handful of individual student loans that total $16,000 right now. They are all close in principal but vary in interest rate. It simply doesn't make sense to allow interest to build up on a high interest rate loan instead of paying it down so the accrued interest is manageable. I just put a 2k payment towards my loans, so I'm getting serious about this. Good luck to you!
@JordanPike5 жыл бұрын
Why pay the smallest loans off first before the loans with the highest interest rates? Can someone fill me in here? Thanks!
@VanillaWahlberg5 жыл бұрын
The idea behind it isn't focusing on interest rates, but instead on the total amount of each debt. You pay minimums on the larger debts you can't pay off quickly, and then pay all you can afford extra on the smaller debts. When you've paid off the first of the smaller debts and realize it's manageable to overcome your debt, you then put that money and focus onto the next of the debts from smallest to biggest to keep momentum. We just started ours, we have about $7,000 in debt and are working on paying off the smallest credit card now with extra cash. :D Good luck!

Prioritize debt by interest rate! Paying off a $10k loan at 2.5% and leaving a $15k loan at 6% does not make financial sense. Psychologically, yes, paying off a loan feels good. But financially, it does not make sense. Good luck!
@dsquared5137 жыл бұрын
Anyone who made it past the 6th grade can do the math, and yet the majority of people in America are still in debt up to their eyeballs. Mr Ramsey admits that his program is behavioral, and that that is more important. It's not just about feeling good by paying off a loan, it is about tangible progress and benchmarks. When you have tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt then it can seem insurmountable, but if you knock out something small then it can motivate you and make you realize that progress is possible. Your comment makes it sound as if there is no psychological component to spending and finance, which is just asinine. Psychology is why people pull out of the market on a downturn and lose out on future rebound and gains, it is why people rack up tons of credit card debt because of not having to actually hand the store a stack of your hard earned cash, it is why people buy things that they don't need and can't afford just to try to impress people who don't really care or to try to feel better about their lives. You are talking about the avalanche method, which obviously makes mathematical sense and has its merits, especially for those disciplined enough to follow it. Mr Ramsey espouses the snowball method, which has proven to be successful for his audience. If a person was controlled enough to pay down their highest interest debt even if it takes years and years, then they likely wouldn't have gotten themselves that deeply into frivolous debt and wouldn't need Dave Ramsey's program. All of the companies that want your money have studied the psychology of it. That is why their store is painted a certain color with a specific type of fluorescent lighting, that is why they have sales and rewards programs instead of just offering the lowest price, that is why they offer 0% introductory APR, that is why it is free for the first month and cancel anytime. A lot of people can do the math, but most people can't maintain the correct behaviors necessary in order to control their finances. That is what the baby steps are all about. First you get current if you are behind, and *boom* you've accomplished something. Then you get a $1000 emergency fund, then *bam* you've gotten 2 things done are are on your way. Then you pay off the smallest amount, and suddenly *pow* you've knocked 3 things off of your to do list and begin to realize that you can make progress, that debt doesn't have to be your life in perpetuity. By breaking it down into smaller pieces it helps people build moment and keep from getting discouraged.
@scottecooke7 жыл бұрын
Yes that would be mathematically correct. But as Dave likes to say, "if we were doing maths we wouldn't be in this situation". He also says finance is 20% knowledge and 80% behavior. The snowball method is about behavior modification.

Sometimes going small to large does make sense. Not for the psychological boost, but when you pay small to large you can free up cash flow to really attack the larger loans at a later point.

You know it cost 350,000-500,000 to go to medschool. If the school you went to was work intensive doing 12-14 hours 5-7 days out of the week, not allowing you time to study for your boards, and missing deadline to apply for residency, you will apply the following year in order to begin a medical residency the year after applying, thus you will be a doctor who cannot do anything in medicine for 2 years after graduation with a half million dollar debt. The next step to think about is, what jobs can I do for the mean while ? The answer is nothing, as an MD you cannot work in anything in medicine, not a nurse, PA, RN, or even an EMT.. so you can decide to go to more schooling after you’ve finish medical school, or work like an undergraduate holding 1 full time job, 1 part time, and an extra part time known as Uber just to barely scratch 30,000 per year, in which half of it will go to you school debt ... life is scary, but it’s the only one you have to live, don’t let fear stop you from living

Higher education....lucky if she makes 50k. And it's capped and at the mercy of the state budget.

It amazes me how college educated adults have to call into your talk show asking for advice when in their respective fields of cyber security and higher education should know the answer on how to get out of this hole. Especially the guy in cyber security that knows how to analyze various situations in complex problems. I would personally never hire this guy if he can't self analyze his own situation yet analyze how to get out of it. If he wants to break into the field of cyber security he should start by himself describing a solution to his problem.

+Luis S. At least he's asking for help...

+Luis S. What's your problem? If anything, I think he's smart because he's asking for second opinions. That's sometimes a sign of being educated... that you're willing to admit that you don't know everything.

+Luis S. You do realize that the most intelligent/wealthy people in history have seeked council and asked for advice from trusted experts, family, and friends, right? Everyone needs a mentor of some kind. And plus, his field of Cyber Security and personal debt is not even close to being related as you're expressing. That's certainly an illogical connection.I would hire him BECAUSE he's not afraid to ask for advice, lol.

+James Martin thank goodness he is asking for help because some people stay in denial or never ask and stay in a hole. We all need help at times. I hope he and his wife take the advice and run with it!

Everyone can't be an expert in every area. Anyone who thinks that they are is a fool. A smart person sees that they need help and asks for it.
