at 0:55 the kite is already turning as the rider walks upwind, since there is some tension in the lines, and the backline will tend to make the kite turn at 3:07 the rider says "make sure not to turn the kite before you reach your launch position" and at 3:16 it is reinforced that you should only turn the kite when you are at 90 degrees with your kite. that said, it feels intuitive that if we are at 90 degrees before turning the kite there is a higher chance of the lines getting tangled somewhere, unlike when you keep the kite turning sooner, since then the lines stay +- straight

Safety knowledge and practice never grows old. I try to review them from time to time. I performed a beach launch this morning with a 17m kite and used these pointers. Thanks

2 comments I find it best to not walk upwind of the kite as it increases the chance of a line going over the wingtip. I find it best to start turning the kite while you are below the kite using the steering line attached to the wingtip farthest away. Once the kite has formed into a c shape at the side, it is best to take a couple of steps down wind as illustrated but it should be pointed out this is to reduce the power on launch. Excellent video thanks for posting.

Yes i understand what you are saying, however the iko procedure wants us to don t touch lines and bar untill the kite gets to the C position in order to minimize the risk of creating power or launching the kite prematurely. Also the way you are describing might make the kite slide a lot on the beach, and potentially damaging it if there are shells or sharp objects ;) I believe your method is not wrong but maybe for more advanced riders, iko standards are studied to be used by the majority of the kiters with the idea of minimize risks for riders and gear and people on the beach ;)

Why did you cut video when kite go from sand to C position ? 😂 How may times have you tryed to put kite in C position without touching bar and steering lane?

my IKO experience - i paid close to $2k for the IKO instructor training course at miami kiteboarding, including travel and expenses to get my IKO instructor certification. on the 'about us' page of my website i listed my qualifications, level 2 PASA and level 2 IKO instructor ...i'm known for giving safe instruction and have a 5 star trip advisor ratings. the head office of the IKO called and told me i could not list my IKO certification on my website or use the IKO logo because i'm no longer an IKO member. does anyone find that strange? what college or university do you know of, when you graduate asks you to pay a membership fee every year or you can not mention you have a degree from the college or university ...seriously? and no, i did not watch your video. and, the depower/trim rope is just that ... you can use for both, trimming or powering up or down.

IKO, finally you've come to reason and accept (and promote) the safest way to self launch (without hooking to the harness before having line tension). But it's been a long way !! Props to Philippe Ancelin from One Launch Kiteboarding to first promote and teach the technique.

Just a question I see in the first part of the video the center lines were de-powered completely but in the last part the guy didnt do the same thing? I'm wondering if the center lines are completely in then the steering lines would be very slack, wont there be more chance of the kite wing tip and lines going over?
@IKOINTL
@IKOINTL Жыл бұрын
I understand what you are saying, the point is to to walk to the “starting position” always keeping the lines in tension. The fact that the kite is depowered makes it more safe but yes, the steering lines will be more slacked, however the front lines, or powerlines, will have more tension, so its actually going to prevent for them to get stuck around the wing tip of the kite.

Do you feel as a beginner that using short lines to start launching your kite is advantageous? Thanks
@IKOINTL
@IKOINTL Жыл бұрын
In general for a beginner, you must always start flying your kite with shorter lines and learn all the important skills this way. Like this, you are in total safety. Then, once mastered, you can use longer line that generate more power but you already know how to handle it.

@IKOINTL thank you. And what line length would you recommend on an 8m kite for a beginner pls? Even in light wind with 8m lines im getting launched into the air & pulled around so much. I'm 63kls

You should never depower the kite when launching, as it reduces your control of the kite once it does launch. Some brands like the one in the video have too much trim adjustment to the point when it is fully trimmed or depowered you can't steer the kite properly. Launching without hooking in is another example of incorrect advice and completely ignores that many people no longer use a hook (IKO again too slow to realise what is actually going on in real kitesurfing). I've been teaching kitesurfing for nearly 23 years and my expired IKO instuctor number is 199

Totally agree with you! De-powering the kite on launching is the biggest misconception in IKO teaching method and it must be reconsidered and banned as soon as possible! I've been teaching kitesurfing for nearly 18 years and my expired IKO instuctor number is 9952

Pulling on the trim strap is not depowering the kite, it is trimming it, this is a misconception we used to do indeed. It is best to have a kite well adjusted for any manœuvre, it will react better. Glad to see that expired IKO Instructors still come and watch our videos and take the time to comment and give us their feedback ;)

@TheStevemccormack I agree with you, it is not mandatory to completely pull the trim line, but is recommended to pull it at least a bit or even completely in strong wind conditions. I also agree with you that is definitely not recommended to launch your kite while being unhooked, just I'm not sure in what part of this video you have seen that is advised to launch the kite without hooking? Thank you Petar

You always say "Hold your Chickenloop" buit in fact it's above Chickenloop and above Quickrelease. So better say hold the Depower-Rope above the Qickrelease. Or am i wrong?
@IKOINTL
@IKOINTL Жыл бұрын
You are right about the terminology. In practice, you can either hold the Chickenloop or above it on the Centerline (we do not call it the Depower rope).
