How to permanently destroy a hard drive and keep your data safe

Simply deleting a file and formatting the hard drive isn't enough to keep your data safe. Ideally you should rewrite the entire disc at least once with new data (such as 0s or random data) to minimise the chance of any data being recovered by any unwanted party.
Personally I would have re-used it or sold it, however this drive is faulty and no longer works. It was a perfect opportunity to show you how to open a Western Digital desktop hard drive I extracted from the 'My Book' series; to physically destroy the disc platters some more and to see what the inside looks like out of curiosity.
I could have taken it further by drilling or smashing it to pieces but its made out of metal instead of glass or ceramic in some cases. I think it's adequate for what's on the drive. But feel free to adjust the amount of damage you want to inflict on the disc.

Well the fact is hdd are built like tanks and need taking apart when a nvme is basically chewing gum strip can easily be shredded to dust
