Great questions: I thought I had thought of everything!

Nice one, Melody! That said, I write Phoenix, and I have no trouble adding non-Phoenix briefs and phrases to my dictionary; you just have to know how to ensure that what you add doesn't conflict with anything ... and you can do just by testing the outline before you add it. I've even grabbed a couple from StenEd ("preponderance of the evidence" and "reasonable doubt"), without having to make any changes.

Glen Warner To be honest, I had to change around a few of Mark's briefs because they conflicted with some of the theory endings. Usually I just give the theory prefix/suffix precedence, but occasionally I'll change the suffix/prefix to be consistent with my Y- and J- endings. For instance, YOUT is out- and JOUT is -out. So I made -a JA. GAL/JA for gala. Really worked out, except for having to one-by-one add in a thousand new entries haha

thanks for this.....I want to do it! Question 1? Di you see this career becoming automated and replacing humans with machines? Question what is the earning average earning potential? i hear as high as $100k? Question can youlearn this skill in home base online environment? i need a career that doesn't require a bachelors. also, i'm also looking into the future and it seems that this career doesn't run the risk of age discrimination. seems that i can study online and take exam for certification. im weighing my options. south Coast college (private for profit is 10k a year /3-4 yr program, cypress comm college takes 3-4yrs , $46 per semester and $260 for steno machine rental, plus about another $300 for books

So, did you end up doing it ?

Sounds like you are in SoCal. There are more reasonable schools that are brick and mortar schools -- such as Tri-Community Adult School and Downey Adult School.

I'm a high school student and I've recently discovered court reporting and I've fallen in love :) I think it's what I would like to do when I graduate. The only problem is that there aren't any schools in my state. I have my eyes on a school that's a few states away (pretty much the closest for me), but I don't know if I can move away for a few years and come back. What do you think of online programs, specifically the CRAH program?
@comrademelody77219 жыл бұрын
Skates and Vinyl I have heard good things about the CRAH program. It depends on how much time you have to devote to the program. If you can stay at a parent's house, for instance, then you can maybe justify 1K a month for an online program. However, if you are going to be working a lot, not so much. Going online requires more focus, but it can save you a significant amount in bills, which means you will have MORE time to devote to the program. You can sign up for online first, and if that doesn't work out, you can plan for a move. It's what I did. Two months online, then moved out of state for 15 months.

I was wondering if I could ask you a question through email but I'll ask it on here first. I JUST started my NCRA accredited school last week, Alfred State SUNY, and now that I'm in it, although I asked the professor the question first, I'm noticing that they are no jury charge tests and the other 2. I'm in the Theory 1 class and our first test is next week. So we only have 1 test a week. It IS a 95% accuracy grading which is good, but basically if you get more than 2 errors you're below a 95% which gives you a 50% grade which is failing. So I'm having a lot of anxiety here as to how much money I've already put into this with the books and steno writer plus the tuition not covered by my financial aid. It isn't really following what you described at all. Is that because it happens in a later class where you have multiple tests a week? I feel like it's easy to fall behind already and have to "repeat" a semester so to speak. The professor already made the comment that at the end of this half semester, it's a 7 week then immediately jumps to the second 7 weeks of the semester, she will tell us if we can move into the next class for the final 7 weeks of 1st semester or if we have to take the course again basically before we can move forward. I liked your idea of the more tests the better, but if in this theory class all I have is 1 test a week I dont understand how that is good for anyone. I'm just wondering if this sounds familiar to you and if I dont need to worry about it because you werent referring to theory class. I don't know! I already feel like this is a mistake. It's a good college and it's NCRA accredited so I know they're following their requirements... I'm just unsure if they're doing it in a way students can be successful as you described or if it's the opposite of what you described?

What good Court Reporting Schools are in atlanta georgia?

Hi Melody, Im interested in enrolling in Alvin community college for their court reporting program. They have produced court reporters that are working in the field currently, they are only a 30 min commute from my home and teach the sten ed theory. they also offer free dictation. however the passing rate is 98% and the amount of tests per week vary...I really like the school but I have a husband and two children so I want to make sure I can progress quickly and not get stuck especially with taking other classes like humanities and etc. since I am pursuing an associates at a community college...Do you think this school is worth it? I have to pay non resident tuition since I just moved here which I believe is $2,176 for 14 credit hours
@comrademelody77219 жыл бұрын
+Cee cee Banks Alvin is a great school. They turn out great reporters, and if you can pass 225 at 98%, it's very difficult to fail the TX CSR (TX's certification test). I never liked their 98% pass requirement, but if it doesn't work out, Mark's school is only an hour or so away. The first two months at an online college didn't work out for me, so I moved from HI to TX to attend Mark's school. You can always adjust mid-way if things don't work. I say go for it!

I'm confused. Most people say you don't need a certificate to be a reporter but NYS requires a certificate of some sort .

So for a student who is just starting out brand new and they haven't been exposed to any theory at all, would you still recommend StenEd over Mark's theory?
@comrademelody77219 жыл бұрын
+Kati Vogt I always recommend Mark's theory because that's the one that I used, but it will be impossible to go to most schools with a theory they don't teach (unless you're starting off in speeds only). So for that reason, StenEd is the second best option because it works well with Mark's briefs, and you can add briefs throughout theory as I did.

Dear Melody i am from India, since a long time i am very eager to learn this court reporting on steno machine because in India we have manual stenography. So can you please guide me to get an admission in your country, i think you are from california and i have searched a lot and came to know that there is school in california for steno, so please guide me if you can.
@comrademelody77219 жыл бұрын
rajiv koshti There are schools all across the U.S. for steno, and also many online. I don't know what the requirements are for providing shorthand in India, but if you want to provide captions online (broadcast captioning), then I would go to an online school and focus primarily on realtime, not speed (which is a U.S. requirement for certification). Providing captions requires realtime, and you can do that from India for sure.

I go to a public court reporting school at an adult school in California. However, the school will not allow me to return after a year because they want me to pay $1300, the amount for a quarter. The reason is because I've been in the same level for more than a year. I thought court reporting school was self paced? I guess not at mine. They consider theory to 100 wpm as a level 1. So they expect you to be out of 100 wpm in one year. It took me 8 months to complete theory and I was at 80wpm right when my year ended. So, I've been out of school for 3 months. I don't have the funds to return at the moment. The school never told us this requirement and only said it was in the contract. They also said the government can only allow students to use their student loans or financial for a certain time frame and its why they regulate levels >.
@kaytimc6 жыл бұрын
All schools require that you complete any specific program within a specified time period. These requirements are set by the accreditation guidelines or the Department of Education in either the state or on the federal level (especially if students at the school are able to receive FA). Federal guidelines suggest that the school dismiss students who are not meeting these guidelines, however, some schools will allow the student to continue as long as the student picks up paying for the tuition themselves. Court reporting is self-paced to the extent that no one can predict how quickly you will pick up a skill, but many people think that self-paced means you pay for the class one time and you can use the resources and continue the education without being charged any more.
