Your content is pure gold. I am so glad I found your channel when I am starting to build my skill set as a software developer by building side projects and open sourcing them. I am still building my foundations and would be soon building much more relevant projects that actually solve a problem or one that I personally am very passionate about. Most of the videos I saw on side projects ended up recommending building apps like simple TO DO list etc. But when you gave that idea of scanning the bar code to check if I had an item in stock before buying it or the dog proof sprinkler system, I told myself, "Now this is the kind of side project I would love to build". I instantly subscribed to your channel after watching the video. I am so looking forward to watching more of your videos. Thank you so much for the inspiration.

Make the application which hand-talk the captions or speach. Basicaly translate normal speach into hand talk for the people with hearing disabilities. So that every KZbin video could be translated, or radio, or TV movie. Or... like the app which listens the surrounding and visualises that on the screen. So that deaf people could stick the tablet on the kitchen wall and to hear dog barking, cup falling off the table or door bell ringing.

Hey I got this idea like when someone goes on vacation... People generally don't know the area well and which places to visit... We tend to hire some tourist vehicle which take us to places... But what if there can be a site which takes in info were u are going to stay and give you a routue map... U start from ur place go to these places in sequence in a circle and come back at ur at the end of the day. And these routes are on daily basis... Like u r going to stay for 3 days 3 different routes can be provided... What do u think about this idea? no personal details would be stored u just need to enter the place of stay n days of stay. So we can travel using public transport saving a lot of money for budget friendly travel.

My two cents about side project is that, work on something that can financially sustain you if you don’t get the job. If all fails, you have that project to help you. And quite ironically, this type of indifference is what attracts companies to hire you!

@EngineeringwithUtsav4 жыл бұрын
Wow that's a hard question. I suppose I always liked building stuff, and was a sucker for "immediate gratification" of some sorts. Compared to other fields, being an engineer, it is super easy to get something from concept to reality... even if you are all by yourself, and just with a computer, internet and some grit. I suppose that's why I got lured into it ... and the more you do it, the more you want to do it ... it's addicting :) Cheers!

@@EngineeringwithUtsav thanks but i was more referring you know after hearing about how you failed high school two times and then you had that shift. So i was referring to that shift, what was the turning point or what pushed it. Not sure if it makes sense but if the above is the answer is fine just wanted to know more on that mental shift. Thanks
@EngineeringwithUtsav4 жыл бұрын
Ahhh... okay, I misunderstood. So during high school, I wasn’t really into academics. I still loved CS and did a lot of projects. In fact, my cousin who was going his final undergrad CS project would ask me for help, and I was only in high school. But when it came to other things like Chemistry and Social studies and all, I had little interest. Haha, I just wouldn’t care for it and ended up failing. I was also a lot into music at that time and we had a lot of band practice and shows, and I thought I’d be a musician haha. Clearly, torn and conflicting priorities. But eventually a lot of my friends ended up leaving to study abroad and went to top schools and I think that’s when it hit me that maybe I need to do this college thing. So studied for GCSE (A levels) exams and passed it and come over to study here. The rest is pretty normal stuff haha .. school, jobs, a couple start ups (maybe I’ll make a video on this one) ... :) Hope this answers your question. It wasn’t a great moment of epiphany, just evolution from a carefree high school kid, to someone who decided to become a bit more focused...

This is great advice! Found your channel today and I am glad I did. Watched a few of your videos and found them super informative! Hope you keep making great content for us. On the topic of side projects, I recently made a site which has popular coding interview questions from different platforms, with my solutions to them, so that I would have a single place where I can refer to them. It has most of the problems I felt have useful concepts which can be used to solve other problems too. What do you think about this project? I learnt quite a bit from it, as I implemented Authorization using a third party application, which allows only the admin to add/edit/delete questions, learnt flask, a unit test framework and SQLAlchemy with PostgreSQL. I'd love to hear your honest thoughts and advice on this project
@EngineeringwithUtsav4 жыл бұрын
Definitely a great side project! What takes it to the next level is - are you the only one using it, or is this useful to others? If you can get others to use it and find it useful, it not only covers some key tech, but also becomes useful.

I have another question too, do you feel we should focus a lot on competitive programming, on platforms like codeforces, participate in lots of contests, until we get a good rating? This will certainly help during the interview, but does it also help in landing interviews?
@EngineeringwithUtsav4 жыл бұрын
I am generally partial to competitive programming when it comes to being a better software engineer or even for tech interviews. That being said, if it interests you, I think it is an amazing way to build up problem solving speed and intuition. The downside is that your main focus will be on solving fast, which doesn't lend itself well to real life coding -- esp. when it comes to code clarity, readability and maintainability. Or even for interviews, where you have a conversation and approach cautiously vs. pure speed and muscle memory. Ranking may help you get noticed, but then you'd need a pretty high ranking I think. But in general though, I think it is a positive thing. Anyone that does competitive coding as a hobby loves coding, anyone who loves coding has a higher chances of being better at it ... so I can't see how that could be a bad thing. Just be weary not to pick up any bad habits from competitive coding that could adversely impact your real like coding.

I started doing a few that people asked in my IG DM, but now I get too many requests and most of them aren't in a reviewable state. So I created a Petreon tier for that: www.patreon.com/utsavized ... my goal isn't to charge people money, but to 1) filter out people who aren't serious and 2) throttle the requests so I get just enough that I can actually review well and give feedback. I may do a generic video on tips for resume ... but resumes generally tend to be very specific to individual circumstances so hard to give generic advice
