I've been watching YTV's about Harley Davidsons since I got my 1st one, '16Black/FXSE. Nobody so far has been as in depth as you. Quite impressed, and I'll be watching more videos and asking more questions, because I am building this bike not for peak power but for great power and great reliability. My plan is to use SE/Parts and the 117, and having the heads ported and polished. Everything has to work together, and I am a novice about H-D engines, so, I'm taking my time, and getting as much info as I can before diving into a disaster area. Somewhere in all your knowledge is my perfect engine, and one day, I'm going to be listening to it. Building a H-D is the most fun and the most work I've done in a long time. Research Research Research. Glad I found your channel. I say I am building it- my mind is- but a PRO is putting it together.

Great videos. Very informative. I appreciate you taking the time to educate people about cams and big bore cylinders. I own a 2019 HD Street Glide Special with an M8 114. I am considering upgrading the engine, but have a lot more questions after watching your videos. Some of the claims I was hearing from the dealer don’t make sense. Anyway, thank you for providing this helpful information.

Giving info so I can get correct results :) . My wife moved up into my old 2001 Softail Night train. 88ci it has a stage 1 air cleaner, SE racing Carb, SE racing intake manifold, SE 211 cams, Vance and hines original shots. The softtail can burn the tires and will pull like a beast. sounds like one as well. getting on the freeway it is still pulling hard at 80 mph and ready for more. I moved into a 2016 RG with SE Stage 1 air cleaner, RCX Tormentor Header, CFR slip on's, Thundermax ecm. I realize it is a different motor and a heavier bike. However it is a pig coming off a stop and trying to get on it unless I down shift two gears. It lays there like a unenthusiastic hooker. I shift anywhere from 3.0 to 4.5 grand depending on what i'm doing. I want more coming off a stop to get the heavy bike going and the hard pull up to 100 mph + like my old softtail . I cannot believe I spent almost twice what I did for my softail to get a lazy bike. Anyway I have been told 585 cam, 525, ect. sounds like 555 fits the bill. what do you suggest. Thank you.

Up your compression, then pic a cam that still closes the intake valve a little early. This gives big bottom end torque which is what you want. Find an online calculator for dynamic compression and play with the compression ratio and intake valve closing numbers until you get the largest DCR for the gasoline you are going to run (research or ask an expert)!!! Another serious consideration would be to put a smaller sprocket on the front or larger on the back.....(gearing) just a thought....it works because it multiplies torque to the rear tire

Gary, you have a good explanation of what cams do. I have an 18 Fatboy with a 114 and I looking to put in a big bore 124 kit. I don't ride high in the rpm range. But I do want it to sound like a top fueler and have plenty of low to mid-range power. The M8 is a different engine than previous Harleys so I am looking to get educated.

Hi, Gary, I like your videos but when you talk about the intake valve closing early to create more compression you are pointing to and taking the numbers from the open column, which I believe is the number (degrees) for exhaust valve opening and not the intake closing?
@Vtwinheaddoctor
@Vtwinheaddoctor 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for pointing that out to be honest with you I am deafly not an expert at making these videos I had my wife right the board out I would have normally did at different had in one column the Intake and in the other column exhaust instead of opening and closing even with that said though I more of the type that can't walk and chew bubble gum at the same time specialy when I'm doing something that is really not all that comfortable for me to do thanks for watching the video I hope you enjoy it anyway thanks Gary.

Hi Gary I gotta 06 road glide with stock 88 cubic inch twin cam and I recently ordered a S&S kit that came with adjustable pushrods, lifters, hydraulic cam tensioners, and the 510 cams. But my heads haven’t been ported and pretty sure it’s 9.1 compression piston. So my question is will those 510 cams be okay to run with non ported heads and that 9.1 compression? Cause In your video on the 510’s you talked about prolly should bump the compression up to 10.1 pistons.

We can't understand everything you are saying. I have a stock S&S 124 supersidewider motor. What cam should I use to make it sound just like a top fuel dragster and still work at low & mid range. I don't think it likes to be wound out to tight... I also have an 80 inch I would like to sound like a top fuel motor also....

Hi Gary I would like to know your opinion on these specs. I'm having a little bit of a difficult time deciding which cams I want for my dyna. I know that I prefer a mid to higher rpm power band. I'm never really under 3k rpm I have a few videos. always hooning and wrapping out the tach Open 20˚/49˚ Close 50˚/22˚ Duration 249˚/251˚ Lift .575" Centerline intake 102.7˚ Centerline exhaust 101.5˚ Lift at TDC INT .199" lift at TDC EXH .206 Do you think this will fit the bill for me or should I look for more of a mid range cam. At the moment my 96ci has a stage 1 a/c with a d&d fat cat and powervision auto tune. Will pull a couple bike lengths on the two stock 103s that I ride with. But I want to be able to hang a little better with my buddies FXDLS. Ha. Rev limit set to 6.2k but the stock cams really dont make much if anything up there. Just setting the rev limit higher gave me the edge on the stock 103s but once they do even stage 1 I'll be back behind the pack. Also will be rehearing the bike 30front and 70rear. So I'll never be below 3-3.5k With that gearing, 80mph in 5th will be right around 3.9k and in 6th will be right around 3.3k.

I've got a buddy who is running them and pulls a trailer and it runs and you don't have to add compression releases with the easy start.. with that cam and having the heads done you should be upwards of the 100 mark for both torque and horsepower and it's a cam that performs all the way through the rpms

Take his info with a grain of salt he needs to do more homework. Duration is Not what determines your power band. Overlap determines your power band. There is no tricking an engine into making power. A smart builder will utilize and take advantage of different factors of a cams profile to make the most power with a given set of parts.
@robertmason8341
@robertmason8341 4 жыл бұрын
I agree with you about taking his info with a grain of salt. Been building motorcycles/engines for 30 years and neither I nor any builders I know pick a cam by it’s duration. There’s a combination of 3 things (primarily) that need considered and all 3 must be considered in combination with each other. They are intake lift, intake duration, and intake valve closing (not in any particular order because they all must be considered together). Lift must be matched to where your heads peak in flow volume (cfm) primarily and air speed (velocity) thereafter. Duration determines rpm potential with short duration limiting peak rpm and longer allowing an engine to rev higher and continue to produce more power as long as the cylinder head can provide necessary volume to support those rpms. When the intake valve closes directly affects the building of cylinder pressure which is dynamic compression, ie cranking compression read on a gauge not static compression which is swept volume of the cylinder at TDC compared to BDC (determined by piston dome configuration (or flat top or dish), cc volume of heads combustion chamber, head gasket thickness. If you close the intake very early you get really high cylinder pressures and make tons of torque down but trade it for less high rpm hp. Detonation (spark knock) comes into play as you can run right past pump gas’s resistance to knock (which is what octane is defined as). All the other cam specs come into play but those are the big three. Overlap and exhaust scavenging fresh fuel/air charge into the intake port gives a “free” effect that could be thought of as a mild “supercharging” and thus increased volumetric efficiency. Cams are complicated but if you break things down and look at everything thoughtfully choosing a cam becomes much easier. These Harley twin cams have been explored to death. Each of the big manufacturers have almost the same stuff. Torque cams, horsepower cams, broad range little of both cams. A few thousandths lift and a few degrees of duration and one company’s cam is almost identical to another’s. Some of the companies don’t even grind their own cams. Cam grinding an “art” in the machining world quite outside of most shops expertise even those that can cut some nice shiny billet parts on a 5 axis cnc. Designing cams an even further “art” form packed with math and technical aspects. There’s a reason why Andrews grinds cams for other big names.
