Hi Shawn As a Spectra 150 owner I have a suggestion for a modification ot your winterizing regime. I would hold off installing the charcoal filter until spring. It has a 6 month usable life, if it should get wet the clock starts ticking. So if any water were to get into the filter housing over the winter you would have blown the the filter by the spring. The filter isn't too expensive, BUT if you didn't realize that it had gotten wet and did flush the membrane with city water you would ruin your membrane and that runs into some $$$! Thanks for the video. Ben S/V DAWN

Thanks for the practical videos of boat ownership. I really think that the 43 is a perfect boat. We looked at the 475 the other day and loved it, just don't think we would utilize it enough for the difference. Boat maintenance and practical guidelines for budgeting would be very useful information if you would be willing to share. Growing up on a farm, non of the chores of this look too complicated. Do all the manuals for the boat allow you to do most of the maintenance? Thank you for your videos, they are great quality and very informative.
@mvfreedom5 жыл бұрын
Lee Thompson thanks for watching and for the great suggestion for a future video that we’ll do soon! Also, we really love the N43 and agree that it’s best from the 475 in that you have almost identical space without the added costs of maintenance and the several 100K more in price. If you’re two adults and two dogs, the 43 is it!

also watch out for the o-rings to possibly come off the filters. whether putting on or taking off, check that o-ring isnt left behind and that new filters actually have the new o-rings on them. Btw what i mean by o-ring is the round rubber washer...
@michaelrhodes60332 жыл бұрын
Thanks for that guys, very interesting. However, once you have replaced the filters, do you have to bleed the system again with chemical.

Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I'd suggest to pump out the saltwater at the strainer, rinse it with freshwater and leave it dry and open during winter. Your strainer is in stainless steel and is getting stained... Rather keep it clean and dry while not needed. All the best

Really enjoy your videos. This may sound like a stupid question, but if you turn off your water maker for the winter season, where do you get the water you will use (for showers, washing machine, etc?). Are you able to refill tanks via the marina?
@dgeorge8525 жыл бұрын
Suggestion. Put a plastic kitchen trash bag over the filter housing first, then the wrench over that before loosening the housing. You won't have near as much water leaking everywhere.

Do you do anything special after using with saltwater? I want to use as you do to prevent overflow when cleaning saltwater strainers and to dry up last bit of water in bilge below bilge pump level.@@mvfreedom
@jgriff32185 жыл бұрын
Is there anything you can do to prevent the corrosion on the sea strainer? Most videos I watch the through hull fittings are corroded which I would think eventually lead to seizing up or leaking.
@mvfreedom5 жыл бұрын
The green patina is a normal occurrence when salt water comes in contact with bronze sea strainers and seacock valves. It is simply and appearance thing and causes no harm to these components. To prevent any seizing of the seacock valves it's best practice to exercise all valves on the boat frequently. We try to open and close all valves on the boat quarterly to keep them functioning properly.

Greetings. I'm new to your channel and love the energy. Quick question: Why were you servicing the water maker (pickling)? Moth balling the vessel for a while, or ???? Now that you are living aboard, will there remain the need for this type of periodic servicing? Thanks.

is there any way to add a drain valve to the bottom of the fresh water filter. there seemed to be water dripping very close to electrical components when you loosened it 17:20
@harvey604journeyman85 жыл бұрын
Did not see you reopen the sea cock in the engine room, or does it stay closed now for the winter season while you are on shore/city water supply?
@mvfreedom5 жыл бұрын
Correct, we leave the sea cock closed until spring to keep the filters dry and fresh until we're ready to use the system again.
@meisbepat5 жыл бұрын
I'm assuming there is a valve to close off the "production water" so that you don't get the storage chemical in your fresh water tanks?
@meisbepat5 жыл бұрын
Also, I very much enjoyed this "boring" video :)
@mvfreedom5 жыл бұрын
Yes, you can divert the production water to a sampling location (we failed to show) however by opening the pressure relief valve prior to running the storage chemical through the system the water maker will not make any production water.
@willyum12082 жыл бұрын
@@mvfreedom holy clean engine room, also the both filters are after the yellow Spectra shut off valve, just turn this valve to off, no need to close the sea cock.

Are you dry-docking the boat for winter or do you still cruise through the seasons?
@mvfreedom5 жыл бұрын
Jeff Slaven no we’re on her year round, but during winter we don’t anchor much of at all, and don’t cruise as long of distances so we put the watermaker on a break until Spring. If we didn’t we’d have to flush it weekly.

Gord Gooding that’s great info since we usually do stay close to wharf street. We’ve been seeing a lot online about Oak Harbor Hotel and Spa so maybe this winter that’ll have to be our next stop in the Victoria area. We are thinking Vancouver for Xmas but maybe we’ll detour 🤔
