How to Plant a Baby Blue Spruce

Theres obviously MANY ways to plant a blue spruce. I live in Long Beach Long Island NY with sand soil below 12 inchs or so. I did the following. I purchased 4 5/6 foot Baby Blue spruce trees from 3 different nurserys. I dug a hole 4x4 feet and 4 feet deep. ( this will "train /allow the roots to grow DOWN ,not verical towards my house foundation or sidewalk ) I removed the sand and made sandbags to be ready for the next hurricane Sandy type storm. I purchased about 5 or more yds of the best "top soil " I could have delivered, I mixed in 3/4 of a bag of Bumper Crop nutrient into each hole near the level of where the tree would sit. I then put the tree in the hole leaving the burlap on it, and planted it so the top of the root ball was 3/4 inchs above the ground level. There's plenty of info about how much you should leave above ground. As my area can get 45-75 or more MPH winds once or twice a year with little notice, I placed 4 tree stakes with ropes covered in sections of garden hose around the tree. I left the stakes up for the first year. I fertilize the trees every year either in spring or fall with a high grade commercial fertilizer from a regional tree care company ( about $200 for all the trees and shrubs on my property)They are doing fabulous.

It’s never too late to add fertilizer. You can add a cup of Holly tone around the drip line of the tree and water in. I recommend doing that at least once a year. Thanks for watching here is a link for more info www.espoma.com/product/holly-tone/

they make a "blue wonder" which is tinier.... not sure if the color is quite a blue. I'll have to experiment with iron if that makes it more blue. Maybe copper. Not sure yet.

I planted my blue spruce tree a month ago and I just noticed the tip of the branches are soft and sagging what did you think I'm doing wrong? I'm not sure If I water too much or not enough I only water every every 4 days since I plant it. I really appreciate your help. Thank you

Unless you’re getting a lot of rain I would water it every day and make sure you mulch it Then after a couple weeks you could spread it out to every two or three days

In summer do you have to cover them to protect them from extreme heat and harsh sun? I had one of these, it was doing great in the pot then i was told to plant it in the ground and it died in the ground. I believe the 2021 summer killed it when we had 3 straight weeks of over 100 degree days consecutively.

The tree is doing wonderful! I’m in zone 6b. Not sure if I mentioned in the video or not but make sure you mulch the tree it’s first winter as it won’t have enough needles fall to have a natural mulch

You’ll have to read the tag. This one is a dwarf variety and I still want it to have at least 5 feet on either side
