Notes taken for next round of planting. This year was first time sowing seeds instead of using nursery starts. Seems I forgot the press down/soil contact part before lightly covering with soil. Now have some blank sections in one of my longer rows. Different types of salad greens all planted the same way. Spinach did fine, both types of romaine sporadically sprouted and some bibb lettuce clearly thought I should have waited for this video! Thanks for all your tips. Much appreciated.

Lines are still really good for me to identify stuff I planted vs weeds. If I see 2 plants that look alike lined up there is a good chance its not a weed and I let it live. The weeds change through the year and I still don't know wtf lettuce looks like. But I'm certain I yanked it all last year hehe. I can identify radish, peppers, cilantro, beets, and at least 1 type of kale. Lots more watching to do still. The hole vs mound based on rain activity was interesting. I mulched my potted tomatoes with grass sunday or monday since we were getting hot weather. They were running dry daily via finger test. It actually stayed too wet this week with no watering and my leaves went yellow so I pulled it off today. It's just wild how powerful 1in of grass can be like that. I'll have to remember not to add a mulch directly after watering. I figured any excess would just drain away and not stay totally soggy like that.

I found a local nursery and called and asked if they had any soil they aren’t going to use anymore and they said yea a whole pile out back I could come get some from! I’m going to check it out today! Plan is to mix it in with the top inch or so of my hard red clay soil and amend it with whatever it’s lacking (perlite, fertilizer, etc.) but I’m tapped out this month and still have so many veggies that need to get in the ground!

“Hangers”! Lol. Now that’s why I love your videos. Seriously though I will be planting using your tips . But even when I’ve made mistakes, stuff still grows. So I like that you don’t stress out about getting it perfect. I’m going to try a patch of scattered carrots this year because planting those in rows is darn tedious! Much needed rain in Calgary right now so might have to wait until after May Long. Thank you. 😊

Another great video! Chamomile and small seeds have always been challenging. they are SOOO tiny. I've heard of mixing them with sand or cornmeal, to make the quantity sown easier to control... I also heard of using a chopstick to pick up individual seeds, but that seems tedious. I have to reiterate, I love your down home style of presenting... I just built a 3' tall self watering planter. I'm gonna snag your planting method for nasturtiums. :) God bless you!

Lay down toilet paper or paper towel, wet it and sow onto it, fold over onto the seeds or use a second layer on top, add some soil on top and wet. 1. It's easy to see your seeds 2. It helps keep the seeds consistently damp. The seeds roots grow through them easily.

@@DebRoo11 Speaking of peppers (I know you weren't!) I put out four starts last evening. Went out this morning, and most of the leaves had been cleanly bitten off of one of the plants! I have birds and squirrels to blame, since it's a 3 foot high self watering planter. My first aid in trying to save the victimized plant is Calcium and aspirin (my soil is already amended with NPK-I did a test.) I'm think inverted 2 liter bottles with the bottoms cut off and air holes too small for critters to get through, or maybe mesh tee-pees over the top. what do you think?

Trying something new with Potatoes this year. Using large planter buckets filled with soil, I placed them in a row close to one another in an oval, filling in the interior of that oval with soil. The buckets will get one or two potato seeds each, with a row of potatoes planted in the oval. My goal is to make harvesting easier, using the buckets as I have previously, so when the buckets are out of the way I just have to push through the pile of dirt to grab the potatoes, instead of digging.

I have a question not related to this video. I've got a friend who wants to transform her backyard into a garden, so I started to help her with it. We discovered as we started preparing the soil that the person who owned the house prior was burying his trash in the soil! We were both shocked to find this trash. There is a TON of it and tiny pieces of plastic all throughout her soil. There are also chunks of metal, old socks, and carpet. Is there any way to decontaminate the soil or is it contaminated for ever now?
@GardeningInCanada6 ай бұрын
Its likely not dangerous but the only fix is going to be sifting through / manual removal

I gave my extra veggies to my neighbors and families. Because human. My one neighbor told me they didn’t like peppers and were discussed that I had that in the mix. Sorry, didn’t get your order for free veggies and flowers. I haven’t given them anything again. Am I being petty. I know I am but seriously, give the peppers to friends who do like it.
