I’ve found it’s easier to cover/smother the grass with cardboard and mulch. Less disturbing the soil and digging.
@buzoff4642 Жыл бұрын
Yes, but that takes a while, for the grass to disappear, and for its roots to give up the grip on the soil below.

you gotta pull out the roots with your hands to make the roots spread when they are in the ground.
@lifewithnature39073 жыл бұрын
Bad idea, you can accidentally pull out and break important roots and end up killing the plant.

Hello This Old House Crew! I live in Fresno, TX which is south of Houston. We used to have a thick woodsy area behind our house until the local community center bought it and cleared it for a track and a gravel parking lot. They only left a slim line of greenery for our fence line. So it is partial sun/partial shade, but nevertheless it's still very hot in the summer. My husband and I miss our privacy, but are unsure of what to put back there, especially with the slim line of old trees, wild plants and bushes. I thought of a Trumpet Creeper, but thought it might get out of control. My husband thought of bamboo, but I am afraid of an invasive species and love to keep plants native. (He also said there is non invasive clumping bamboo?) All we want are good plants that would be beneficial to the environment (butterflies, birds, bees and non-invasive) and will give us great privacy (nice and thick again) as well as easy maintenance and beauty. Please T.O.H., Help this Texas yard become wonderful!

It would depend on what zone you are in. Can you state that information?
@Squshie007 жыл бұрын
Ac76543211 Sorry about that. I'm in Zone 9a according to the USDA maps, but I have seen Fresno is Zone 8b.
@Ac765432117 жыл бұрын
Red Robin would work. You can check at your local nursery as they would carry only the bushes that thrive in your area.

Ac76543211 Wow, I looked up Red Robin and they look great. Can't wait to have a beautiful privacy fence again. Thank you so much for your advice!

😂😂😂😂So much work for planting😂😂😂😂 - still half-assed holes. I just planted 6 bushes - used a shovel - dug a hole using the shovel spade to measure how deep to dig. A scoop out of one side of the hole & another scoop out for the other side. You will notice the shovel spade is the same height as the plastic containers. Add a handful of Miracle Grow I,to the hole, place the plant, add water half way of hole, cover with dirt. Pat down. NEXT plant.

no weed barrier under the mulch?? insanity!
@Siyko7 жыл бұрын
Mulch is a weed barrier
@rickc55667 жыл бұрын
Tyler Petersen usually weeds grow on top of the weed barrier and when you go pull the weed the annoying fabric gets pulled up with it. If you put 6 inches of any material from mulch to river rock etc... The sun cannot hit the weed seeds below and germinate the weeds. You will allways get weeds no matter what (look at concrete sidewalks) but the idea is to minimize the maintenance by doing a quick weeding every once in a while
