Very nice video. Succulents are easy to grow in decorative containers like in this video. When planting new succulents, I line the container with wax paper and use a plant medium combining 2 parts soil (I use coconut coir moistened with water and 10-10-10 plant food), 1 part course sand and 1 part perlite. When I plant in delicate decorative containers like my 100+ year old glazed Fiesta Pottery salad bowl, I lay 2 pieces of wax paper in an X shape and add a shallow layer of absorbent clay pebbles. My succulent medium is placed in the container and tamped down. Trim the wax paper and plant as in the video! I do not water plantings for 2 weeks. When watering remember that succulents have shallow roots and only need surface water; so, I water sparingly when leaves are less than “plump.” I have never experienced water damage to delicate decorative containers using this method. Good luck and good planting!

I like to use a liner with drainage holes so I can lift the liner out and soak the plants and then drain completely before placing the whole thing back in a decorative bowl. Rocks in the bottom promote the growth of bacteria and root rot, which is where a lot of people who thought succulents were easy and require little care see their plants wither and die.

I'm intrigued.... Was this designed for the plants to stay and grow? Or just for a short term display? It looks great, but I'm not sure these plants will live. I see no drainage.... I've experimented with no drainage bowls, but they were at least breathable....experiment in progress. I've had limited success with no drainage. But I also learned that other low/no drainage containers did in fact rot some plants roots, even with minimal or even almost no water. AND, I have learned from experts, DO NOT PUT ROCKS IN THE BOTTOM OF THE CONTAINER, I used to do this.... It was once a common concept, but it is actually bad for your plants....live and learn.

that's why there is gravel.

Gravel doesn't do anything at all. Once the water is deposit at the bottom of the bowl, it will stay there no matter if it has gravel or not. Simply, gravel is useless at the bottom and don't magically separate the water from the soil. Once you water the first time, the soil and water will fill the spaces in the gravel... Yes, as I said. Useless.

in my experience, the water just stays at the bottom & creates anaerobic bacteria. I have to water very very sparingly. I like potting in terracotta with a drain hole & then setting it inside of a nice glazed bowl :)

This seems like a short term display. There’s a huge difference between my succulents with drainage holes after 1 year. The ones without drainage holes tend to elongate and the colours are not as vibrant. The plants do live, but you really have to watch your watering. Essentially, this kind of display is a lot more work to take care of. I enjoy Deborah Lee Baldwin’s succulent arrangement videos.

I really did enjoy this video. I have a pot that I want to plant succulents in but I didn’t want to break it trying to drill a hole in the bottom. It isn’t as deep as yours but I will adjust it to the size of the pot Ty

I wish you had talked about spacing needed between succulents when planning arrangement and why you use gravel on top. Is it to help prevent moisture evaporation or just for aesthetics as you said? Also, why do some florists use glue to set their gravel? How does water get into the soil underneath?

Hi! Does the container used to plant the succulents in need to have drainage holes on the bottom?
@CICOBOOKs7 жыл бұрын
Hi Marietta, no there aren't any drainage holes in the container but the potting mix is used instead to help with drainage. You can get potting mixes specially formulated for cacti and succulents withadded gravel and sand.
